When it comes to celebrations of any kind, no one does it quite like the Royal Family does – and Prince Charles’s recent 70th birthday party was no exception.

Marking the major milestone of being both the longest-serving heir to the throne in British history and the oldest, together with 300 of his closest friends and family members, Prince Charles rang in the start of his seventies with a variety of magical entertainment, an array of sumptuous refreshments, plenty of heartfelt speeches, and lots of dancing, music, and laughter.

And while most of us are grateful to celebrate another year of health and happiness with a simple cake or quality time spent with family, the Royal Family takes birthday celebrations to a new level of extravagance that is hard to relate to – but fun to bear witness to!

A Party Fit for a King – Or a Prince

Prince Charles might not officially be a king just yet, but you would never know it by his epic 70th  birthday celebration that was more than fit for a king!

Hosted by Queen Elizabeth, the glamorous party took place at Buckingham Palace on Prince Charles’s birthday, November 14, where guests were treated to a night that would not be soon forgotten.

For starters, the guest list itself was pretty unforgettable! Of course, Prince William and Kate Middleton and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were in attendance at the glitzy event, in addition to plenty of other royalty like Queen Rania of Jordan, Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium, Prince Frederik and Princess Mary of Denmark, Queen Sophia of Spain, Prince Albert of Monaco, King Harald and Queen Sonjia of Norway, Princess Beatrice, and Princess Eugenie with her new husband Jack Brooksbank.

Not to mention appearances by Dame Judi Dench and Dame Maggie Smith!

For entertainment, Prince Edward performed as ‘the Magical Bisector’, executing a variety of magic tricks for guests, including “sawing” Peter Phillips, Princess Anne’s son, in half! There were also Chinese acrobats and live music, complete with a performance by Jools Holland, to which the birthday boy and his wife, Camilla, showed off their dance moves to.

And if magic tricks and acrobats weren’t enough to keep the guests busy, the delectable array of gourmet food certainly was. Guests were able to choose from mouthwatering options like salmon tartlet, poussin with autumn vegetables, and ice cream bombe, to name a few.

In addition to the magic show, acrobats, live music, dancing, and scrumptious food, Prince Charles was treated to more than a few heartfelt speeches from family and friends. Prince William’s speech was a hit as he spoke about all of his father’s least favorite things, saying, “Let me tell you all the things my father hates…red squirrels, the environment, traditional architecture.”

And not one to be upstaged by her grandson, Queen Elizabeth gave a touching and surprisingly humorous speech in honor of her son, saying, “It is a privilege for any mother to be able to propose a toast to her son on his 70th birthday. It means that you have lived long enough to see your child grow up. It is rather like —to use an analogy I am certain will find favour — planting a tree and being able to watch it grow.”

She continued, “My mother saw me turn 70, of course. And she was heard to observe that 70 is exactly the age when the number of candles on your cake finally exceeds the amount of breath you have to blow them out.”

The Queen concluded her speech with a humorous reference to a company that Charles set up in 1990 to sell organic food products, saying, “So this toast is to wish a happy birthday to my son, in every respect a duchy original. To you Charles. To the Prince of Wales.”

Well said, Queen Elizabeth, well said. Sending our most sincere birthday wishes to Prince Charles and wishing him many more happy and healthy years to come!
