Aging Skin Secrets: Avoid These Foods If You Don’t Want to Help the Clock

By Margaret Manning June 22, 2017 Beauty

The foods that enter our body are very important for our outward appearance. How so? Celebrity makeup artist Ariane Poole is passionate about nutrition and skincare. Today she has joined us in a discussion about the foods we need to deviate from, and some other topics. Enjoy the show!

Margaret Manning:

Our guest today is Ariane Poole who is a great friend of Sixty and Me. Ariane has been working with us now for over three years, sharing her secrets about makeup, beauty and skincare. Thank you so much for being here, Ariane.

In our videos we always talk about makeup, but today I’d like us to discuss skincare. A lot of people would argue that having great skin and a good skincare regime is almost as important as great makeup. What are some secrets and tips for new products that you’d like to share with us?

Ariane:

I’ve got some cool products to share, but first, I want to quickly touch on nutrition. You should know that there are certain things that speed up aging. We all know about the sun and smoking, but things like sugar actually do speed up the process, too. So does alcohol, because it converts to sugar when it gets into your system.

Any product that’s white and contains refined carbohydrates also falls into this group. I’m very much a believer that what you put into your body reflects on how you age and how your skin looks. I am not a saint, but I try to abide by the 80/20 rule: 80% of the time I’m really abiding the rules, and then 20% of the time I simply enjoy food.

Margaret:

You have to enjoy your life as well. We had an international Food Fair here this weekend, and the thing I loved the most was coconut macaroons with cinnamon.

Ariane:

Oh, that’s very interesting. Your body loves sugar.

Margaret:

It was nice that they balanced the sugar out with cinnamon.

Ariane:

That’s a very good thing. If you are going to indulge, make sure you balance the unhealthy food (like pizza) with something healthy (like a salad).

Moving on to skincare, I’ve recently discovered several products that I’m really excited about. The first product is called Tri Balm by Frances Prescott, and it is a cleansing balm. It’s great if you are travelling, but also great if you are not.

It looks like a deodorant, but when you put it on your skin it’s creamy and it emulsifies. It does three things: it cleanses, it exfoliates and it moisturizes. If you add water to that, it feels like a wonderful emulsion.

It also smells really good. It’s one of those things that I discovered, and it’s been my go-to product for face cleansing. It’s a bit like a cleansing oil, but not as liquid, so it doesn’t get all over the place.

Margaret:

That is cool. I took some coconut oil with me on my last trip. I had to put it in a plastic bag because even though I had a tight lid on it, it leaked a little bit. Do you know who does one similar to that? I’m sure you are familiar with Eve Lom.

Ariane:

I didn’t know she did one of those.

Margaret:

She does a balm like that in a jar. It’s not quite as firm as the one you’ve just described, but it’s the same idea. Hers is a creamy yellow and liquefies when you rub it. Then you massage the skin and use a facecloth to wipe it with.

Ariane:

This is the same kind of idea. I carry it in my travel bag because it doesn’t leak. The other thing I really like is this special eye mask which is infused with copper. You wear it at night, and it is supposed to help diminish fine lines.

It doesn’t get rid of them completely, but copper is really good for the skin, which is why they are putting copper into so many things these days. I’ve only had the mask on for a couple of nights, but I will make use of it in the summer months.

Margaret:

What is it called? Show me that one more time.

Ariane:

It’s Me by New Glow.

Margaret:

It would be great to use on a plane. It would psychologically make you feel better.

Ariane:

Exactly. I also discovered these facemasks at Sephora—one is firming, and the other is hydrating. The firm one temporarily firms your skin, and it has a really nice effect. They have also got a pore-tightening one. Estée Lauder do a mask of advanced night repair as well.

Margaret:

I can’t afford to buy their advanced night repair serum because it’s not cheap, it’s $40 a little bottle, but that was the only product that I ever used that actually felt like it was helping my skin at night. This mask is very cool.

Ariane:

Yes. They won many awards for this product. What I also find good is that they do it in little eye masks as well. If you don’t want to use it on the whole face, then you don’t need to.

Margaret:

That’s a really cool idea if you are on a budget. Just be very focused on what you want to work on. For me that is my eyes, and if there’s something that is going to help them soften, like the little eye mask, I would prefer to get that than the whole facemask.

Ariane:

Exactly. I have an issue with uneven skin tone. Everyone has their own issue to battle with. If you are on a budget, and you need to spend only in certain areas, look at the area you’re most concerned about. Invest in that area and don’t spend too much on other areas.

Another product I’d like to present has to do with dryness of body skin dryness. My skin looked really dry even though do all the steps—exfoliating, moisturizing, etc. So I came across an Aveeno product while I was in Vancouver.

Margaret:

Oh, Aveeno is very popular in Switzerland.

Ariane:

Really? It has the weirdest texture—it’s really liquid and gel-like—and you use it while your still damp. It has literary transformed not just my arms, but my legs as well. We don’t have oil glands on our legs, so it’s important to use the right kind of product.

When I saw how great it worked I knew I had to share it. I was struggling, and I’ve tried so many other types of moisturizers, but all of them were falling short of what I needed them to do.

Margaret:

What is it called? I want people to be able to recognize it because Aveeno have a lot of products in their product line.

Ariane:

It’s called Aveeno Active Naturals with Natural Soothy Oatmeal, and it’s a skin relief shower and bath oil. You can use it in the shower or bath. It’s not a cleanser, so you apply it after you have cleansed your body. The effect on my skin was amazing. I recommend it because as we’re going into the summer months more skin shows, and you want it to look the best it possibly can.

Margaret:

That’s a great idea. What else have you found?

Ariane:

We mentioned facial oils earlier, and a great one I’d like to introduce is this Sarah Chapman Overnight Facial oil. I really love it because you put it on before bed, and it gives you a blooming look when you wake up in the morning.

Margaret:

Ever since my trip to Bali, where there are a lot of facial oils imported from Australia, I’ve started to use a rosehip and Vitamin C one underneath my makeup.

Ariane:

Rosehip and Vitamin C is a fantastic combination—one of the best ones you can buy.

Margaret:

I think Sarah Chapman is a British brand, isn’t it?

Ariane:

Yes, it is a British brand, and she says, “Beauty sleep is no longer a dream.” I was really impressed with that facial oil, and you can order it online. It has got the most divine, delicious scent.

Margaret:

Can you tell me what’s in it?

Ariane:

I’m not sure, but I can smell Neroli. I’ve seen Sarah Chapman interviewed, and it’s obvious she’s put a lot of effort and work into choosing the oils that go in there.

Margaret:

Perfect.

Ariane:

I’d like to clarify that none of these products are given to me to promote. I’ve gone out and researched and purchased them. I’m sharing them with the community, because I think they are so fantastic.

Margaret:

And that’s what we love about you. You wouldn’t recommend a product unless you really like it.

Ariane:

If I purchase something, and I don’t think it’s any good for me, it might be good for somebody else. The things I’m sharing with you today, I have tried and have found fabulous. They are my recent discoveries.

Another recent discovery is a thing called Triple Sec by DryBar, and it’s a hair product. I have got very fine, flat hair, and I hate it when it gets really flat, especially when I’m traveling. What it does is, it gives texture, it amplifies and refreshes your hair.

If you are traveling, especially if you’re flying, you get off the plane, and your hair looks awful. With this spray you solve that problem, and it doesn’t change the color of your hair, which is nice.

Margaret:

It puffs up the hair almost right away.

Ariane:

It puffs it up, it feels nice, and it smells really good. Then you can brush your hair, and smooth it, and it looks and feels really good—it’s not sticky like a hairspray. There are other ladies that have fine hair like me, and I just thought that was a really cool product.

Margaret:

Your passion about skincare and makeup products is contagious, Ariane.

Ariane:

Thank you. The last product I’m going to show you is revolutionary. It’s a root cover-up by Wow. Even when we get our hair colored our roots come through. I was doing QBC one day, and it was a show I wasn’t prepared for. I had really big roots—white, because my hair is completely white underneath my usual red color.

I went and bought this cover-up at a salon where I was doing a talk, but I didn’t really know how to use it. And when I got to QBC, the Today Special Value was something else by the Wow brand, and the guy who presented it showed me how to use the cover-up.

Margaret:

That was lucky.

Ariane:

Talk about a fortunate thing! What I liked about this product is that it also comes handy if you have those little thin patches that make your hair appear thin and weak. You simply apply the product over the patchy area, or over your roots.

They do different colors and nuances. When you’re done your hair looks fuller and thicker. For somebody who is blond, and you’ve got that scalp bit coming through, you can put the blond one on. They only intended it for touching up roots, but it’s great to apply over the patchy areas, especially as we get older. It makes your hair look fuller and thicker, and I thought that was something really important to share. Also, it’s very important that it doesn’t come off. If you get caught in the rain, it doesn’t run down your face.

Margaret:

You said the brand name was Wow?

Ariane:

Yeah, the company is called Wow.

Margaret:

This seems like a great product. I don’t know how many times I’ve walked behind someone who looks so beautiful from the front, but then the back of their head looks like they haven’t combed their hair or it’s thinned. It’s a good advice to always spend time checking the back of your head.

Ariane:

As we get older we become conscious of our looks more, and we want to put the best aspect forward.

Margaret:

That would be the perfect product because you can apply it just at the area you need.

Ariane:

And you don’t have to be talented or a hairdresser to do it. It’s really easy to apply, and I knew that I had to share this with the community. All of the products I showed you today are really interesting things that people might not pick up on, but they might have concerns about those issues.

Margaret:

I think they are great, and I want to thank you for sharing them because I don’t think I’ve seen those products anywhere.

Ariane:

These are really interesting products that are answering the needs that we have. What I thought was really good is that most of the products aren’t outrageously expensive. For instance, the Aveeno one was $6.99.

Margaret:

That is a really nice brand, and the price is affordable. You are so much fun to talk to, Ariane. Thank you for being here and sharing the products that you love.

What is one skincare/makeup problem that you think you need help with? Do you use any of the products Ariane mentioned, and how did you come about them? Are there any products that you have found work miracles? Please join the conversation!
