What Choice Will You Make?
My conversation here is to inform and inspire you to realize the potential you have, even at your current age. Life will have its challenges. There will be many choices given to you. As the saying goes, old age isn’t for the weak or faint-hearted.
Know What Thriving Feels Like
To me, thriving is living healthy, vibrant and fulfilled. It is my mantra and my mission. Living healthy is keeping your mind, body and spirit alive, fit and challenged.
I realized soon after I retired how important it was that I did something meaningful with my life. And, this is why I am so passionate and committed to helping others Thrive in unRetirement. I know the difference it can make in your life.
There has never been a better time than now to seek joy and fulfillment through doing what matters most to you, choosing your life purpose and what you want your legacy to be.
Are you trusting that you have been blessed with this extra time because you have something important to share? You have a choice for this time of your life. It all depends upon your mental and emotional responses.
Are you hopeful or fearful? Decide the life you want. Take charge of your life and choose to live happy and fulfilled. It starts here.
Stretch Yourself in Retirement
It’s easy to fall into a pattern of doing only what you need to get by. Challenge yourself every week to go beyond what’s normal for you. Then, celebrate your victories. Sometimes it is easy to ignore the effort and focus it takes to get to the gym, learn new computer tools or make time to meditate. Do you stretch yourself?
Be Happy in Retirement
I have found that it is important to have a good outlook on life. Be optimistic about this chapter of your life. Attitude is everything. As Mike Dooley says, “It’s not what’s happening around you that determines your health, finances or hotness… but what’s happening inside of you, exclusively.”
Find ways to feel your best inside. Meditation is a great way to begin your day, see what’s possible and connect with your Higher Power. Use tools and strategies to focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want.
Define Your Lifestyle for Your Retirement Years
I know thriving is about designing the lifestyle you want during this time of your life. You retired because you wanted life to be different for you. What is that difference you want? Is that what you are living? If not, follow these steps.
First, I suggest that you identify the lifestyle you want in retirement. What matters most to you as you plan for this time of your life?
Then design your lifestyle based on what matters most to you. My focus is on spending time with my husband, kids and grandkids, and friends. Also, I love traveling, being active, focusing on my spiritual connection and practice and building my business. These are my “big rocks.” They are “musts” for my life. No more shoulds for me. I want to thrive and live fully, not regret that I didn’t live a life that mattered to me.
Build Your Calendar and Life around These Big Rocks
For instance, the first thing I do when I wake up is my mediation and spiritual readings. Then I go to my 5:30 a.m. fitness classes. After breakfast, I begin my work day. I use my journals for laser focus on what’s most important for me that day, like identifying the three things that matter most based on my goals and outcomes for the week, month and quarter. Then, I begin that work.
Weekly, I schedule my big rocks in my calendar. Once, they are in my calendar, I feel joy and peace because I know my world is full of all the things I value. I do better when I have things scheduled. It provides me with the discipline and structure I need to make sure it happens.
I use my journal to reflect upon my progress, see what needs to change and to show my gratitude and appreciation for what I’ve done, what has happened and all I’ve been given – even the challenges.
