Creating a New Life After 50: Tips from a Mom of 6 Turned 80-Year-Old Model and Author

By Sixty and Me June 21, 2019 Interviews

Life for us women over 50 can be so much more colorful when we let go of old routines and embrace new ones. Many women have successfully reinvented themselves when they reached their 50s, but very few women have done it quite like Valerie Ramsey.

Join us in our discussion today and find out how Valerie, once a stay-at-home mother of six, started a corporate job in her 50s, became a model in her 60s, and authored several successful books over the past few years.

Life Begins in Middle Age

Life doesn’t have to stop being fulfilling when you reach your 50s. For Valerie Ramsey, life began at 58, when she landed a job in public relations. Like her, women can do anything if they put their heart, mind, and soul into it.

Exude Confidence

For a 58-year-old Valerie, who received a cancer diagnosis merely a week after landing her dream job, confidence made her strong and resilient. Her confidence helped her face all her challenges and juggle her dream job with her modeling career. Sometimes all we need is a little confidence to see all of the opportunities that the world is offering us.

Don’t Let the Past Define Who You Are

Have the courage to venture out of your comfort zone. Who knows? It might lead to something worthwhile. Instead of worrying about who you used to be, think about who you can be. If an opportunity presents itself, follow your gut. Don’t be afraid to go for it especially if it’s a chance to grow.

Power Past Your Fear

Most of the time, the only thing that’s stopping us from being the best version of ourselves is fear. Whether you’re young or old, overcoming your fear will help you discover new opportunities and attain your version of success.

Visualize Yourself in Your New Path

No matter what you decide to do in your 50s, you have to visualize yourself in this new life. You need to be able to see yourself succeeding at the job you’ve always wanted and now have. And don’t forget to have fun. Soak in all the lessons that you can and use them to succeed in whatever endeavor you undertake.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for What You Want

It’s time to put an end to the stigma that asking for what you want is a bad habit. It’s not. Whether it’s asking for a raise or requesting for some help, you shouldn’t feel scared to say what you have to say. Sometimes, that’s all you need to do to move forward in your career or in life.

Recognize an Opportunity

Stepping into the unknown can be terrifying. But once you do it, you will realize that it’s also the realm of endless possibilities.
