Executive or casual, it’s always important to have your clothes fit your body type. Join us in discussion with fashion expert Melanie Payge who will demonstrate several great combinations for pear shaped women. Enjoy the show!

Margaret:

Hello, everyone. Welcome to this special fashion edition of the Sixty and Me show. Today I’m in Milan, having a conversation with fashion expert Melanie Payge. We’ll be discussing the principles of dressing for women over 60, and I’ll be the fashion model. So, what have you done with me, Melanie?

Melanie:

First of all, let me say that this fashion designer wardrobe is by Mercatino Michela. Here you can choose items that are in your size and fit your body shape.

For this demonstration, I’ve chosen a more executive look to fit your role as a director of a company such as Sixty and Me. The dress is great for your body type as it fits perfectly on top (and you are about one or two sizes smaller on the top than you are on the bottom) and comes down nicely.

To have it fit a little better in the skirt, we would probably need to have the seams taken out slightly. If you’re a double size, my advice is to get your clothing tailored so that it fits well both on the top and on the bottom.

When clothes are made in mass production, they’re meant for a perfect size, and when we’re over 60, none of us are perfect.

The jacket I want you to try looks both a little executive and also fun and summery. I’ve also chosen white shoes to go with this outfit. They’re cute and fun, but also, comfortable. I think you could work all day in this outfit and still feel good in the evening. How do you feel about this?

Margaret:

I really like this outfit, and like you said, I’m a double size, so it’s important that the dress fits so well on the top. I also agree that maybe it needs to be altered a little in the skirt. The jacket is also great. Please tell me why it’s good for me.

Melanie:

The main thing that makes this jacket a good choice for you is that it’s darted in the back. It has seams that pull in the waist, and since you have quite a small waist, it goes nicely with your full figure. With a full figure, you always want to make sure that your clothes are fitted so that they come in.

On the other hand, if you are heavier in the middle, for instance, then you want to go with a straighter jacket. In your case, Margaret, the jacket looks great because it’s fitted into your form. You could wear it with pants, a solid colored dress or other combinations.

Margaret:

It does feel great. The odd thing here is that I’ve never owned a white pair of shoes in my life, but these have showed me that it’s possible to be comfortable in flat shoes that aren’t frumpy. They look pretty cute too.

Melanie:

Yes, they do. You mentioned earlier that you prefer to wear pants over dresses, so let’s see what we can do with your look in pants.

Margaret:

Sounds wonderful. Let’s do it.

Melanie:

Great. What you have on are straight leg pants. These are linen, but you can probably get them in every type of fabric like wool or something suitable for the winter.

Margaret:

They feel good.

Melanie:

For a jacket, I’ve chosen another executive, this time in leopard print.

Margaret:

To be honest, I wouldn’t buy this kind of jacket, but I’d love to try it.

Melanie:

I know many people stray from prints, but a leopard print goes with almost every skin type because of the browns and the beiges. Of course, you never want to mix your patterns, but a simple outfit of black or beige goes well with this kind of print.

Next, let’s look at the shape. As expected, the jacket fits perfectly with your waistline and goes around your hips in a lovely way. This is a nice executive look if you want to feel fashionable.

Margaret:

I’m very interested in what you said about the shape of this kind of jacket. Normally, I wouldn’t look for a particular shape, so could you explain that a bit more?

Melanie:

Sure. It fits perfectly on your shoulders, and the back enhances your waistline then falls straight down hugging your hips.

Margaret:

You said most people can wear leopard prints. Is this true for all animal prints?

Melanie:

Nope. Just the leopard and tiger prints because they’re a mixture of browns, blacks and beiges. Let’s try something different since you mentioned you don’t really like prints.

Margaret:

Okay. I like the feel of this one. Tell me more about it.

Melanie:

It’s a white jacket with black accents. It goes well with the black you have on and with your white pearls. It’s got a good line in the front and fits well in the back.

Margaret:

Is there padding in the shoulders?

Melanie:

Yes, it does. It’s a designer jacket that has some padding, but the pads go straight across and they don’t come out. They fit right into the position of your shoulders. It also goes with the look of the design, and of course, these aren’t like those shoulder pads from back in the 80s.

Margaret:

I’m asking about the pads because I’m a pear shape – smaller on the top and larger on the bottom – and I was wondering whether a slight padding could help balance my figure a bit.

Melanie:

Yes, your figure allows for slight padding such as the one in this jacket. But you do want to avoid big shoulder pads.

Margaret:

Okay, I’ll remember that. Thank you. That is a lovely jacket. What do you have next?

Melanie:

Well, I’ve chosen something that might be nice and easy for you to wear on a more casual basis. Once you have your base – which consists of comfortable black pants, a comfortable black dress, or maybe a sleeve t-shirt – you choose the jacket.

Margaret:

This one is really lovely. It fits into the bohemian description of my personal style that we discussed previously.

Melanie:

It looks great on you. With this kind of jacket, you don’t even have to look at the shape. It’s just easy to wear and really comfortable. You’re a very tall woman so this kind of long and flowing jacket looks very elegant on you, especially with this silky fabric.

The way you would make it look wrong is by trying to belt it or make it fit into your shape when it’s not. The original shape is straight, and it fits your body perfectly.

Margaret:

This would be super versatile. You could wear a simple black dress under it too.

Melanie:

You could wear all of your four essential pieces in almost any color under this.

Margaret:

I really love it. Thank you, Melanie, for this demonstration of body principles that fit for my shape. We will look into other shapes as well, so stay tuned. See you soon. Bye.
