Happy 74th Birthday, Diana Ross

By Margaret Manning March 25, 2018 News

Even though I was born in England, I have a close connection to Detroit, where I spent several years as a teenager.

Since I love all kinds of music, you can probably imagine how my formative years were influenced by the Motown sound. It was all the radio stations ever played in Detroit.

I loved the rhythm and soul of the music and the glamour and glitz of its performers. I remember the greats, like Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight & the Pips, The Temptations, Four Tops and, of course, Motown’s most successful act of all, the Supremes.

Today, the face and voice of the Supremes, Diana Ross is turning 74. Let’s give her an enthusiastic Sixty and Me happy birthday and wish her all the best for the years ahead.

Happy 74th Birthday, Diana Ross

Most people would agree that, as a member of the Supremes, Diana Ross helped soul and blues acts to find success in the mainstream music business. Motown was a phenomenon that changed so many lives – and Diana was at the very heart of the experience.

Diana Ross became a legend, but, her background, like that of so many Motown stars, was humble. She was born in Detroit, Michigan as Diana Ernestine Earle Ross. She was the second of 6 children.

Living in housing projects and singing in a local Baptist gospel choir helped to shape her childhood. Fortunately, she eventually found herself in the right place at the right time and her powerful singing career was launched.

When I watch this video, I am reminded of her charisma, style and talent. It brings back so many memories for me. How does it make you feel?

A Voice Matched by Her Style

We all know the songs that made her famous and that helped to define our generation. Songs like “You Can’t Hurry Love,” “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” “Love Child” and “Someday We’ll Be Together” are in our boomer vocabulary.

After she left the Supremes, Diana pursued an acting career and was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in “Lady Sings the Blues.”

More than Just an Amazing Voice

As with so many celebrities, Diana experienced her share of drama, but, now, at the age of 74, she is a proud mother and grandmother. She has been married twice and has 5 beautiful children.

Diana Ross is a music icon who influenced so many of today’s artists. We really do have a lot to thank her for. So, let’s all wish Diana Ross a very happy 74th birthday!
