For more than 30 years, Fred McFeely Rogers (Mr. Rogers) entertained and educated America’s children. Some of us were lucky enough to be kids when his television show, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, launched, in 1968. Others first experienced this wonderful actor, writer and producer through our children’s interactions with his show.

But, regardless of how we knew Mr. Rogers, we all knew of him. Some of us were among the 8% of the U.S. population that watched his show when it reached its peak popularity in the 1980s. Others simply recognized him as a wholesome, kind and friendly personality… the kind of person that you would love to invite to your house for dinner.

When Fred McFeely Rogers died of stomach cancer in February, 2003, it left a hole in the American subconscious. He represented so many things that we cherished about our culture – the quest for knowledge, good manners, neighborliness and optimism.

Despite the fact that we had seen him on TV for three decades, almost right up to the time that he tragically passed away, his story felt incomplete. We wanted to know more about the man behind the legend. We were curious about the teacher who first sparked our curiosity.

Well, if you, or your children, loved Mr. Rogers, I have good news. Tom Hanks has signed up to play the legendary entertainer and educator in an upcoming biographical film.

Tom Hanks to Play Mr. Rogers in an Upcoming Biographical Film

Tom Hanks is an unusual actor. Not only is he one of the most talented entertainers of all time, but, he is one of the nicest people of any profession.

In fact, while the two actors took part in very different projects, they share many similar traits, both on and off the screen.

So, perhaps it is no surprise that, when TriStar Pictures decided to produce a biographical film, based on Mr. Roger’s life, they turned to Tom Hanks.

In an interview with Variety, Hannah Minghella, president of TriStar Pictures said, “This is the perfect alchemy of talent coming together at the perfect time to remind us all of the transformative power of kindness and respect to heal and to unite. We are proud to partner with Marielle, Tom and everyone at Big Beach to bring this inspirational true story to audiences all over the world.”

We couldn’t agree more!

This announcement is still new, so, we don’t have all of the details regarding the film. However, we will let you know as soon as a release date has been announced.

In the meantime, here is a video from PBS Digital Studios, celebrating Mr. Rogers.
