When I lived in Dallas, Texas, I was always fascinated by a shop called The Purple Store that proudly announced “Everything we sell is purple!” From Christmas decorations to clothes, mugs to watches, they were totally committed to purple lovers everywhere. So, I couldn’t help smiling when I heard that Radiant Orchid, a beautiful soft purple, has been chosen as the Color of the Year 2014 by Pantone.

At this point, you might be asking, “who cares?” But, in my opinion, this is an interesting and important decision for a couple of reasons.

First, Pantone’s choice will impact everything from fashion to home décor in the coming year. You will see Radiant Orchid everywhere! Their choice is not random. They spend months researching market trends, consumer color preferences and many other factors. If you are choosing flowers for your garden, buying new clothes, or decorating your house, this might be a fun color to consider this year.

Second, according to this research, purple is a favorite color of women over 60. With Boomers becoming an increasingly important demographic for businesses, marketers would be smart to pay attention to Pantone’s recommendation this year.

In fact, you may have noticed that the color that I selected for the Sixty and Me logo is very similar to Pantone’s Color of the Year 2014. Perhaps my decision is not surprising when you consider that the psychology of color tells us that purple is associated with adjectives like “creative”, “imaginative”, and “wise”. I can’t think of a better description for the fabulous women in the Sixty and Me community!

Personally, I choose to see Pantone’s Color of the Year 2014 as a sign of things to come. This year, let’s come together and show the world that women over 60 have a voice.

Let’s paint the world purple together!
