When I travel by train, I often gaze at people and pretend to be Sherlock Holmes. One of the trends that I have noticed recently is tattoos for older women. It seems like many women my age are breaking aging stereotypes and adding some ink to their beautiful older bodies. Personally, I’ve never had the urge to get a tattoo, but, I totally understand where they are coming from!

Everyone makes assumptions about people by looking at their clothes, but, the truth is that many of us hide secrets where no-one can see them. Many women have tattoos. I’m not even talking about tattoos that we got when we were in our teens and 20s. Many older women are embracing tattoos as a form of self-expression well into their 50s, 60s or 70s. And why not?

What is Driving the Tattoos for Older Women Trend?

The fact that many older women are making the decision to adorn their bodies with tattoos may surprise you. What is most fascinating to me is that the trend is growing.

Clearly, older women today have a voice and aren’t afraid to use it. Unlike previous generations, many of us are simply not content to “age gracefully.” Having a tattoo is a way of expressing personality and style. In fact, in some ways, it declares a woman’s values, interests or even political points of view.

Other older women are getting tattoos to remember someone that they lost or an important event in their lives.

This is perhaps the most lasting and beautiful expression that one can make.

I’d love to get your thoughts on this. Even if you don’t have a tattoo yourself, please take a few minutes to answer the following questions.

Do you have a positive or negative association with tattoos? Would you (or have you) made the decision to adorn your body with a tattoo? What artistic symbols resonate with you? Do you think that it’s appropriate for women in their 50s, 60s, or 70s to get tattoos? Please join the conversation.

Here is a short video that I recorded on the topic of tattoos for older women. I hope you enjoy it!
