When I asked the Boomerly community whether they still believed that it’s possible to find love after 50, I knew what to expect. I was prepared for a fairly even split between people that thought that finding love after 50 is possible and those who have given up entirely on finding a romantic relationship.

91% of Boomers Say Finding Love After 50 is Possible

Boy was I wrong! Not only did the majority of boomers believe that it’s possible to find love after 50, but, the results weren’t even close. Out of 151 people who responded to the question, 138 (91%) said that they believe that finding love after 50 is possible. Of course, this doesn’t mean that 91% of our members are actually looking for love, but, at least they haven’t closed their mind to the idea.

These results show that we’ve come a long way since the 1980s, when Newsweek published its infamous article claiming that women over 40 had a greater chance of being killed by a terrorist than finding a husband. This article was later discredited, but, the damage was done.

Over 50 Dating Sites Offer New Opportunities… and Challenges

Part of the reason for our generation’s renewed sense of optimism is that technology is making it easier than ever to meet people who share our interests. While over 50 dating sites are far from perfect, they do offer baby boomers the opportunity to search for interesting people, even as our social circumstances are changing.

Our optimism is also supported by the statistics. According to the 2001 census, 41% of women over 50, who get divorced, eventually remarry. It’s true that a larger percentage of people under 50 get remarried, but, this probably has to do with their desire to do so. Simply put, many people over 50 just want to stay single. As I recently wrote, there is a very real trade-off between intimacy and independence after 50, so, I can’t say that I blame them.

Regardless of whether you are looking for love, I hope that you find these statistics comforting.

Life after 50 is a time to make all of your dreams come true. So, let’s remind ourselves to follow our passions, never stop learning and continue to believe in love.
