A few days ago, I posted an article on the website that solicited some fascinating comments. In the article, I explained that Helen Mirren had recently said that “Women today are living in exciting times!”

Are Women Today Living in Exciting Times?

Then, I asked the women in our community whether they agreed with this statement. I was shocked by the responses!

I expected at least half of us to agree with Mirren. After all, women of all ages enjoy a level of freedom that our grandparents could only have dreamed of. We are also living in a time of increasing lifespans and technological breakthroughs.

To my surprise, most of you disagreed with Mirren. Many of you questioned even Mirren’s ability to understand what “real” women are going through.

Or, Are We Living in “Sad,” “Terrifying” or “Unequal” Times?

As one woman said, “Replace *exciting* with *terrifying* and I could agree. I don’t have her resources to obfuscate the obvious.” Another commented, “Helen, although I like what you do, I don’t think you realize the challenges us real woman face. You are given all the roles under the sun. No wonder you say it’s an exciting time.”

I’m not criticizing these comments. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and, given all of the tragic news of late, I’m not surprised that many of us feel overwhelmed, sad and even a little scared.

It’s just that, on the whole, if you look at the larger trends, it seems clear that women today have it better than previous generations. While we still have a long way to go to achieve true equality – and we should continue to fight – we are in a good position to take advantage of all of the amazing advances in technology, medicine and leisure that are appearing every day.

I understand that many older women are struggling financially, physically and emotionally. We can and should do more to help each other. But, does this mean that, on the whole, women today are living in “terrifying,” “impoverished” or “unequal” times?

What’s Your Take on This?

I’m so curious to hear your thoughts on this topic. When you look beyond your personal situation, how would you describe the world that women, in general, are living in today?

Fill in the blank: “Women today are living in __________ times!”
