Choosing The Road Less Travelled

By Lily Bradshaw January 02, 2026 Travel

I may have bloomed, but I am not yet withered, I may have passed my peak, but I am still on the mountain. Just because I am over 60 doesn’t mean there isn’t a whole lot of life ahead of me; in fact, I can be braver, perhaps even a little riskier, as I am no longer the bread winner, the mum, the one who so many depend on. I can fill my life doing things I love.

Whenever I have taken the road less travelled it has always paid me handsomely. Meeting interesting people, learning new skills, going to places that have taken my breath away.

As a 60-something solo traveller, I have become very good at communicating. I would live a very lonely life if I didn’t! Neighbours, taxi drivers, people in restaurants/bars, shopkeepers, at the beach, mums in the park. Many people have excellent local knowledge, and I have been to places I would never have heard about if I hadn’t said hello to a stranger. :)

Different Types of Travel

Travelling doesn’t necessarily mean moving in the physical sense. Imagination is mind travel, and you can go anywhere you choose in an instant. You can fly to the Moon, travel the world, or sail the ocean. The world (or more!) is your oyster.

As a lifelong traveller, I struggled when a few recent health problems set me back for a while. Now, with the power of YouTube, I can spend the night in the desert under the stars, back pack around India or climb to base camp Everest. Of course, it is not quite the same, but we are the first generation to be able to share these experiences, and whilst I am recuperating, I would rather travel alongside someone else virtually, than not at all.

So Much to Learn

I can learn about the region, culture, food, climate, people, all from the comfort of my sofa. I can explore different modes of travel and find the perfect season for me at the click of a button. I can research prices, accommodation, visas, history, and even brush up on my language skills!

I have become emotionally invested in some of my favourite YouTubers, delighting in their successes, worrying when things aren’t going great, and marvelling at their bravery. There are people travelling the world in a jeep, a couple cycling from London to India, a man who walks around the UK with a tent, and many van-lifers. :)

My mind is expanding, my knowledge growing and, through their adventures, I am able to consider whether places might suit me in the future. I can see if the land is flat or mountainous, the weather too hot – or just right, how arduous the journey is, and whether I would like it. :)

So Many Choices

There are as many things to do as your imagination allows for. Cooking trips to Italy, river cruises on The Danube, Walking tours, Safaris in Africa, Photography Courses, Ancient Egypt, Language Immersion Villages, Rail Travel, The Golden Triangle in India, Camel Trips in the Desert, Wine Tasting holidays, Chateau Tours…

Many you can do independently, or you may prefer to go on small tours with like-minded people. Travelling with others can be a great idea if you are a little nervous about travelling alone. Often these trips are quite small, so you get to know others in your group while having an almost personal service.

So whether you are a physical explorer or prefer to watch on the sofa with a cup of tea, it doesn’t really matter. The road less travelled has so much to offer. Who knows, it might be your YouTube channel that I subscribe to next! :)

Physical travel no longer interests me as it once did, when I travelled a lot in my 20s and 30s, even living overseas for 7 years. But I love travel documentaries, especially when the “trip” is to a location that it’s pretty near impossible for the average person to travel. The photography can be gorgeous and the commentary educational. I also enjoy a good book, fiction or non-fiction, about places, history, architecture, etc. While I’ve had a few health issues, this isn’t the reason travel doesn’t appeal to me as it once did. I’m fortunate to live in a beautiful place that people are known to travel to for vacations, so that’s reason #1. Reason #2 is that I’m busy with hobbies and interests, etc. And reason #3 is I love being home. But to those who love travel, “Go for it!” Age doesn’t matter, as there are many options these days.

Good morning Janet, thank you for joining the conversation. I totally agree with all your reasons… I have the same! But I still can’t stop myself from thinking… just one more big adventure :) Lily x

Tessa

Thank you for your article that has encouraged me to go on a solo trip that ive been pondering over for a while. I do have a friend that I live with & he has been my travel partner a few years ago, but he’s younger than me and still working. But then I realised that im now retired and im still curious about exploring some of the world, especially my own country that ive seen very little of.
I had an emergency gallbladder operation a couple of years ago, so im a bit concerned about eating different foods as my tummy is now quite temperamental!
Im now going to make enquiries about a coach trip up through central Australia. Ive seen some of it before and id like to see more. But I do need to check on a few things, like; ‘do the coaches have emergency toilets?’ Very important for over 60′,s!
So thanks for giving me the push I need to live the rest of my life by doing it while I still can. 🕊

Hi Tessa thank you for joining the conversation. That is wonderful to hear! I know what you mean about toilets… often the first thing I scout out :) Lily x

NANCY

Thank you Lily!!!
Such a great and inspiring article to start the new year!

This 81 year old will be traveling to Italy for two months (June-May) while staying in a Tuscany villa. Never thought at this age I would truly be loving and living my life to the fullest after having a lung and part of the esophagus removed due to a rare form of cancer.

Upon returning to stateside, will be living in the country on ten acres w/ a meadow, woodlands and a stream. My newly built cottage will be my retreat. Yes, Lily as you say “I have bloomed, but not yet withered”.

Incredibly grateful and appreciative of Margaret’s Sixty and Me support group. You girls have changed my life in contributing such valuable and wise knowledge. You have given a ticket to live our lives and dreams as we wish w/o guilt attached to it. A friend asked me why in the world would I want to make such drastic changes at my age. My reply, “WHY NOT”!

Happy New Year to my fabulous support group friends!

Hi Nancy, thank you for joining the conversation and your very kind words. What a wonderful inspiration you are! Tuscany will be beautiful :) Your cottage sounds idyllic and I am sure you will make many wonderful memories there. Happy New Year to you too Lily x

Martha

My dream trip is to go to Scotland and especially to the Isle of Skye which is part of my heritage. I want to live there, but alas the U.K. only admits retirees for 6 months.

Lily Bradshaw

Hi Martha, thank you for joining the conversation. Sounds like a wonderful dream to have :) Lily x
