10 Ways to Restore Skin Hydration After 60

By Shanna Bynes Bradford July 02, 2026 Beauty

Have you ever caught your reflection and thought,”When did my skin become so dry?”

If so, you’re not imagining it – and you’re certainly not alone.

As women enter their 60s and move beyond this decade, their skin naturally changes. Years of hormonal shifts, sun exposure, and the normal aging process mean our skin produces less oil, loses collagen and elastin, and becomes less efficient at holding onto moisture. The result? Dryness, tightness, fine lines, and a complexion that may seem less vibrant than it once did.

But here’s the encouraging news: beautiful skin isn’t about turning back the clock. It’s about giving your skin the care and nourishment it needs today.

Healthy, hydrated skin is possible at any age. You don’t need a cabinet overflowing with expensive products or a complicated 12-step beauty routine. Instead, a few thoughtful habits and the right ingredients can help restore comfort, softness, and that healthy glow we all love.

Here are ten simple ways to help your skin thrive after 60.

1. Start with Hydration, Not Just Moisturizer

One of the biggest skincare misconceptions is that moisturizer alone is enough.

In reality, hydration begins before your moisturizer goes on. After cleansing, while your skin is still slightly damp, apply a hydrating serum containing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin. These ingredients draw water into the skin, creating the perfect foundation before you seal everything in with a moisturizer.

Think of it this way: your serum gives your skin a refreshing drink, while your moisturizer keeps that hydration from escaping.

2. Choose a Gentle Cream Cleanser

If your face feels tight or squeaky clean after washing, your cleanser may be working a little too hard.

Foaming cleansers can strip away the natural oils that mature skin needs to stay comfortable. Instead, choose a creamy, fragrance-free cleanser that removes makeup and impurities while protecting your skin’s moisture barrier.

Your skin should feel clean – but never stripped.

3. Make Ceramides Your New Best Friend

If there’s one ingredient mature skin truly appreciates, it’s ceramides.

Ceramides are naturally occurring lipids that help keep the skin barrier strong and healthy. As we age, our ceramide levels decline, allowing moisture to escape more easily.

Using a moisturizer rich in ceramides helps replenish that barrier, leaving skin softer, smoother, and more resilient.

Sometimes the most powerful skincare isn’t flashy – it’s foundational.

4. Follow the Three-Minute Rule

Dermatologists often recommend moisturizing within three minutes of washing your face or stepping out of the shower.

Why?

Because moisture begins evaporating from the skin almost immediately.

Applying your moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp helps lock hydration into the skin, making every application more effective.

It’s one of the simplest beauty habits with one of the biggest rewards.

5. Nourish Your Skin from the Inside Out

Healthy skin begins long before you reach for your favorite face cream.

Staying hydrated supports your entire body, including your skin. While drinking more water won’t magically erase wrinkles, it helps your body function at its best.

Your diet also plays an important role. Foods rich in healthy fats – such as salmon, walnuts, avocados, flaxseed, chia seed and olive oil – help support the skin’s natural barrier. Colorful fruits and vegetables provide antioxidants that help protect against environmental damage, adding essential vitamins your skin loves.

Beauty truly begins on your plate.

6. Exfoliate with a Gentle Touch

Dry skin often looks dull because dead skin cells build up on the surface.

The answer isn’t scrubbing harder.

Instead, exfoliate once or twice a week using a gentle rice powder enzyme cleanser or a mild exfoliating treatment such as an AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid). AHA is a group of water-soluble acids naturally derived from plants and fruits designed for mature skin. Gentle exfoliation removes dull surface cells, allowing moisturizers and serums to absorb more effectively.

When it comes to mature skin, kindness always outperforms harshness.

7. Add a Few Drops of Facial Oil

Many women avoid facial oils because they worry they’ll clog pores or leave their skin feeling greasy.

The opposite is often true.

Lightweight oils like squalane, jojoba, or rosehip oil can provide lasting comfort while helping lock moisture into the skin. Apply just a few drops after your moisturizer to seal in hydration and create a naturally luminous finish. Oils are a great way to remove makeup and hydrate your skin before using a facial cleanser.

Think of facial oils as the final protective layer that keeps all your skincare working longer.

8. Turn Down the Shower Temperature

A hot shower may feel wonderfully relaxing, but your skin pays the price. Hot water strips away the protective oils that mature skin desperately needs.

Choose warm – not hot – water whenever possible, keep showers reasonably short, and gently pat your skin dry with a towel instead of rubbing.

These small adjustments can make a noticeable difference in how your skin feels every day.

9. Let Your Skin Repair While You Sleep

They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing.

During the night, your skin naturally repairs itself and restores moisture. That’s why your evening skincare routine deserves just as much attention as your morning one.

After cleansing, apply a richer moisturizer or nourishing night cream before bed. While you sleep, those ingredients work alongside your skin’s natural renewal process.

Waking up with softer, more comfortable skin is one of the easiest beauty rewards you’ll ever earn.

10. Never Leave Home Without Sunscreen

If there’s one skincare habit worth committing to every single day, it’s protecting your skin by wearing sunscreen.

Even after 60, ultraviolet rays continue to break down collagen, increase dryness, and contribute to wrinkles and age spots.

Applying a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning protects the healthy skin you’ve worked so hard to nourish.

Rain or shine, sunscreen remains your skin’s best defense.

This seems a bit over-complicated. According to this, every morning I should wash my face with a creamy, fragrance-free cleanser, then use hydrating serum, then moisturizer, then facial oil, and top it all off with sunscreen. My face feels heavy & greasy just thinking about this, nevermind the 30 minutes and untold $$$ I’ve spent in the bathroom. And this is just my face. I’m not sure about the rest of you, but I have skin All Over My Body, and it’s all dry. What do I do about those scaly, wrinkly shanks? Or my forearms & hands? I need my shower to have an “oil me up” setting.
