How to Choose a Dress

Choosing a dress for women over 70 involves a thoughtful consideration of comfort, style, and personal preferences.

Comfort Is Key

  • Prioritize comfort in your dress choice. Look for fabrics that feel good against your skin and provide ease of movement.
  • Consider features like stretch materials, breathable fabrics, and dresses with a relaxed fit for optimal comfort.

Flattering Silhouettes

  • Choose dresses that flatter your body shape. Empire waistlines, A-line silhouettes, and wrap dresses are often universally flattering.
  • Experiment with different styles to find what makes you feel confident and comfortable.

Length Matters

  • Opt for dress lengths that suit your personal style and the occasion. Midi and knee-length dresses are often versatile choices.
  • If you prefer longer dresses, ensure they don’t drag on the ground to prevent tripping hazards.

Color and Patterns

  • Try a variety of colors that complement your skin tone. Jewel tones, pastels, and neutrals are often popular choices.
  • Consider subtle patterns or prints, but avoid overwhelming designs. Simple patterns can add interest without being too busy.

Sleeve Options

Choose sleeves that make you feel comfortable and confident. Whether you prefer short sleeves, three-quarter sleeves, or full-length sleeves, select a style that suits your taste.

Neckline Choices

Experiment with different necklines to find what works best for you. V-necks and scoop necks can elongate the neck, while boat necks and higher necklines provide additional coverage.

Versatility

Look for dresses that can transition from casual to more formal occasions. Versatile pieces allow you to get more wear out of your wardrobe.

Accessorize Thoughtfully

Pair your dress with accessories that complement your style. Scarves, jewelry, and handbags can add a personal touch.

Personal Expression

Ultimately, choose a dress that reflects your personal style and makes you feel confident. Your clothing is a form of self-expression, so embrace the styles that resonate with you.

I was very disappointed in the size choices. I need an over 18 size dress, I hope that isn’t a criticism for full figured women.

Show real women not models. Most 70 year old women do not wear high heels…

Vanya Drumchiyska

Hi Wilhelmina and thank you for commenting.
Sixty and Me is a magazine, not a shop, therefore we do not have our own models to show. We pull photos off of web shops to give our readers some ideas for available styles and choices.
I hope you find the information helpful, regardless of the models that we have no control over.

Ann-Mari

I agree.please show older woman earing these dresses

Joy

I’d wear a couple of these dresses and as recently being Mother of the Groom, I wore gorgeous Italian, high heeled, strappy sandals for the reception and changed into cuban heeled ones for the dancing after.
I still wear my high heels out when I know I’m going to be sitting most of the time.
Best of both worlds, lol.

Robin McCarthy

I do not know too many women in their 60’s and 70’s who still wear, or own, high heels, especially spiked heels as shown.

Vanya Drumchiyska

Hi Robin,
Please feel free to disregard the heels. This article showcases dresses only.
Thank you for reading and commenting!

All of these dresses are beautiful, but as a 70+ woman, I’d love to see the models wearing them also in their 70s.

Janet

Me too!

Vanya Drumchiyska

I’d have to say, me three!
You will probably not be surprised to know that finding stores that feature 60+ or 70+ models is very difficult. If we had to use only such photos, we wouldn’t have anything to offer!
So, until stores decide to include older models for all their clothes, we can only use what they do have.

But you can always write to stores and let them know you don’t feel represented and to request they hire older models. Who knows, it might just work!
