Hairstyles for Women Over 60 with Fine Hair

By Sixty and Me December 01, 2023 Beauty

Do you have fine hair? Fine hair is not to be mistaken for thin or thinning hair. Chances are if you have fine hair you have had fine hair your whole life. Fine hair simply means that the diameter of your hair is small and not thick. Thin hair means that you don’t have a lot of hair and this can change throughout your life.

Styling fine hair can sometimes have its set of challenges. Many women choose to wear shorter hairstyles when they have fine hair.  It doesn’t mean you can’t have long hair if your hair is fine. You can have long hair and learn to use thickening and styling products.

Pro tip: The darker the hair, the more contrast and exposure of the scalp will be visible. Lighter tones and highlights can reduce the look of fine hair.

Here is a list of great options for short hair:

  1. Strawberry Blonde with Volume – Light hair color and added volume will give a look of thicker hair.
  2. Shoulder Length with Fringe – A fringe can help reduce the look of a receding hairline and make hair look thicker.
  3. Layered Long Pixie – Pixies are always a great idea when you have thin hair.
  4. Short Natural Black Hair – Super short textured hair is an easy go-to hairstyle.
  5. Messy Super Light Pixie – Go for a bleached blonde messy pixie if you are more adventurous and daring.
  6. Single Length Bob Cut – Bobs are a classic, and women with fine hair can sport this cut easily.
  7. Highlights with Fringe – Try adding a fringe and some varying highlights.
  8. Short Behind-the-Ears Bob with Fringe – A short bob with hair styled behind the ears can help make your hair look thicker and more structured.
  9. Super Short Salt-and-Pepper Pixie – One of the easiest hairstyles to care for.
  10. Natural Wave – Work with the natural wave of your hair as it grows.

It seems the older a women get the shorter and lifeless their hair styles become; I don’t want to be that person. At this point it seems like I have perpetual short hairs, perhaps because I usually put it up in a ponytail or braid. I’m at a loss on what to do, I live in So Fla so I still want to be able to tie it up when it is (always) hot. Any ideas?

Patricia

I am with you. I am 66 and I don’t want the short poodle cuts they show. But I do want something with style. I have fine hair (that does not hold a curl) but I do have a good amount. Going to the salon on Monday to get a cut. I am not looking forward to it since it’s hard to find a stylist who can cut fine thin hair if you can’t cut fine hair it will show all of the mistakes.

Roxanne

I’ve always had baby-fine hair, I keep the color light and have worn it in a bob for years. I like the bob because it looks good and is easy. I don’t want to spend a lot of time on my hair as I’d rather be outside learning new things.

Claudia

I have very thin wiry hair that stands straight up when I get out of bed in the morning, and so far has been untamable. What can I do?

Joanne

my hair is very very fine its so thin it falls of I don’t know what to do it makes me cry I’m going bold

Marci

Check into clip-in hair pieces or extensions. I had a friend (very young) who had thinning hair due to a medical condition & she got those – you couldn’t tell even.

Margaret

My hairdresser told me clip ins can further damage your hair. Makes it hard to know what to do really.

Lori

I take biotin vitamins and use biotin scalp oil. It does wonders for my hair loss and thickens my hair. I plan to use shampoo and conditioner with biotin too.
