On Your Own for Christmas? Six Ways to Have a Fabulous Time!

By Lily Bradshaw December 23, 2024 Senior Living

Many of us can find ourselves on our own over the Christmas period. This can be for a variety of reasons, but it doesn’t mean that we can’t enjoy it. There are numerous things we can do to celebrate the Holidays or to make this a memorable and enjoyable time.

A recent poll in America showed that 19 million people expect to spend Christmas on their own this year, a considerable number through choice, so those of us who spend Christmas alone this year are in great company!

Give Yourself a Break

So, what could you do at Christmas to make it a lovely time rather than something to endure? Perhaps you might think about taking a break somewhere? There are so many options, from travelling around your own country, perhaps adding a little nostalgia and visiting places you knew when you were younger. Or you could spend some of your rainy day money on a bucket list trip and make a million memories.

I know prices often sky rocket during holiday periods, but if you can wait until last minute, you may bag yourself a bargain :). I have spent a great deal of time travelling on a budget, even sleeping in my car on the beach, and these have created some of my happiest memories. Think about what you can do to make yourself happy, whatever your circumstances are.

Treat Yourself

If you don’t feel like going away, perhaps you might like to treat yourself to something nice, perhaps seeing a show, going to a concert or a spa. If funds are tight, maybe you could do a home spa, making it as indulgent and luxurious as your situation allows. Candles, bubbles (both in your bath and in a glass!), warm, cosy towels and then binging on your favourite show or films.

Be kind to yourself and treat yourself as the V.I.P. you deserve. Self-love is the most important love there is.

Get Together with Others Who Are on Their Own

If you live in a community, or know others in your neighbourhood who are spending Christmas alone, perhaps you could get together and make a really special day. I have heard of several of these over the past few years and everyone seems to really have had a good time. So much so that they often repeat it the following year, sometimes doubling in size!

You can design it any way you want, perhaps each person bringing a dish or drink for you all to share. You might like to include a theme, perhaps Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, Murder Mystery, Santa’s Soundtrack, Christmas Around the World, or even a Non-Christmas Party! You may like to include a Secret Santa (put a limit on the spend) so everyone gets at least one Christmas present this year.

Volunteer

There are always opportunities for volunteering at Christmas, especially as staff may wish to take a much-needed day off. You could offer your help at a variety of charities/institutions including animal shelters, hospitals, hospices, homeless shelters, the church, Salvations Army, etc.

Not only will you have a good day and have a huge amount of company, but you will be making a real difference to other people’s lives. Sounds like a lovey way to spend Christmas!

Ignore Christmas

Or you could choose to ignore Christmas altogether this year. The 25th of December is just one day, but it is your day, and you can choose to spend it any way you like.

You could get next year off to a great start by writing down your New Year Resolutions or perhaps you might like to write up a planner for next year, or spring clean the house. How good would that feel! Or how about spending some time researching that trip you are planning next summer? If you are not planning on a traditional Christmas dinner, perhaps you could cook yourself something special, maybe a paella you had in Spain, or a moussaka from your trip to Bulgaria!

If All Else Fails…

You could just watch your favourite Christmas movies back-to-back, eat and drink everything you want and have the most relaxing day ever. :) My choice of movies would include The Holiday, Miracle on 34th Street, It’s a Wonderful Life, Elf and Polar Express. Well, that’s me sorted :)

For the first couple of Christmases after I had left my husband, I booked a table at a posh hotel & had a sensational lunch at those places. The food was delicious, the staff were lovely & I got to spend time watching people, which I luv to do. I was so happy to be by myself, and yet share the day with others.

Nice article. This is my first Christmas in a new (to me) house and community. I am fortunate to have lovely neighbors who have invited me over for Christmas dinner, and I will be going to Christmas services with them this evening. When alone at Christmas, I usually put some lights and a few cheery decorations up and listen to Christmas CDs. My all-time favorite Christmas movie, watched last night, is “Love, Actually”.

Hi Lisa Thank you for your lovely comment. Sounds like a perfect Christmas. I think it says a great deal about you that your neighbours have invited you for Christmas dinner when you have just moved in. I hope you had a fabulous day! Lily x

As a family, we celebrate Yule (Winter Solstice), so I’m often home alone on Christmas. This year I have a special dinner planned for myself, and will be watching my new gift, a DVD of ‘The Bishop’s Wife’ with Cary Grant, Loretta Young, and David Niven.
I love ‘Miracle on 34th St,’ 1947 version, and watch it every Thanksgiving; it starts the Christmas season for me. :)

Yay! Watching old Christmas TV movies always puts me in the mood. My #1 favorite is the 1951 version of A Christmas Carol with Alastair Sim!

Hi Shellie, Thank you for joining the conversation. I love winter solstice too and celebrated going to the highest hill around and watching the sun go down :) I hope you had a wonderful time! Lily x
