Because no city is 100% safe, it’s always wise to stay attentive to your belongings, particularly in crowded areas, and avoid walking alone at night in dimly lit or unfamiliar areas. It’s also beneficial to familiarize yourself with emergency contact information and have a general understanding of the city’s layout.
By maintaining awareness and employing personal safety measures, you can enhance your overall security and minimize potential risks while traveling to new cities.
While crime statistics are often the first thing we look at when assessing a city’s safety, they don’t tell the whole story, especially for women over 50 who may be thinking about relocating or traveling solo. Safety is also about how easy it is to live your daily life with confidence and comfort.
A city might be safe, but if it’s designed around cars, getting groceries or meeting a friend for coffee can become a challenge. Cities with good public transit systems, pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods, and accessible sidewalks make daily life easier, especially for those who prefer not to drive. Look for areas with reliable bus or rail lines, senior ride services, or compact downtowns where you can walk to what you need.
Top-rated hospitals are great, but how close are they to where you’d live? Are there urgent care clinics or primary care offices nearby? For older adults, having fast access to medical care in an emergency – or even for routine checkups – can be just as important as the reputation of a major hospital. Bonus points if a city offers specialized care for age-related conditions like arthritis, osteoporosis, or cardiac health.
A city may check every box, but if housing, groceries, or property taxes are sky-high, it may not be sustainable, especially if you’re on a retirement income. Look into average rent or home prices, tax rates, and healthcare costs before making a move. Some cities even offer tax incentives or housing support for older residents.
Cold winters and sweltering summers can take a toll, particularly if you have joint pain or other health concerns. Cities with moderate climates offer more opportunities for year-round walking, gardening, and socializing outdoors. Don’t underestimate how much the weather can affect your energy, mood, and overall well-being.
Feeling safe also comes from feeling connected. Look for cities with strong senior centers, hobby groups, fitness classes, cultural institutions, and ongoing community events. Whether it’s a watercolor workshop at the local library or a walking club for women over 50, staying socially active supports both mental and emotional health.
In short, true safety isn’t just about what could go wrong; it’s about whether a place helps you live the life you want. When evaluating a new city, think about how it supports your day-to-day needs, your independence, and your happiness.
If your city is not on our list it does not mean that it is not a safe city. These cities are only but a handful of cities that are considered safe in the USA.
