Death or Life – You Choose

By Cynthia Landers July 29, 2026 Mindset

Every decision you make is the difference between death or life. So choose wisely.

When you hear others talk about life and death, life is usually first and then death. I chose to turn it around. Because death seems to be the choice of the masses. Why? Because death doesn’t require a challenge. Life requires a challenge. This article will focus on decision making that influences our choices that result in death or life. Every decision leads to one or the other – no matter how insignificant you think your decisions are.

Spiritual life and death aren’t about physical survival; they’re about the condition of your soul. Every choice you make, whether to act in love, forgiveness, and truth or in selfishness, anger, and deceit, acts as a seed that either cultivates spiritual vitality or leads to inner decay.

Your daily decisions hold profound spiritual weight for a few key reasons:

The Law of the Harvest

You naturally reap what you sow. Consistently choosing patience, grace, and obedience to God nurtures inner peace, joy, and growth. Choosing to cater to selfish desires or corrupt behaviors dulls your conscience and separates you from spiritual wholeness.

The Battle Between Spirit and Flesh

Our decisions continually pull us in one of two directions. The Apostle Paul described this as a daily choice between “sowing to the spirit” (which produces life, peace, and eternal value”) and “sowing to the flesh” (which leads to spiritual emptiness and death). Raise your hand if you consistently choose the flesh. Breathing Vitality has helped countless people choose the path that leads to better decisions, therefore better outcomes.

Shaping Your Character

Decisions are the building blocks of who you become. Over time, your choices form habits, and your habits form your character. Making decisions rooted in integrity builds a robust, vibrant spirit, whereas chronically compromised choices lead to spiritual death.

The Ultimate Choice: How Our Daily Decisions Shape Spiritual Death and Life

Every day, we make dozens of choices. Most seem trivial, like what to wear or what to eat. Yet, beneath the surface of the mundane, a deeper reality is at play. From a spiritual perspective, our decisions are never truly neutral. Every choice we make is an investment in either our spiritual vitality or our spiritual decay. Spiritual life or spiritual death. In the spiritual realm, life and death are not events that happen at the end of our physical existence. They are states of being that we cultivate right now, one decision at a time.

The Anatomy of Spiritual Choice

Physical death and life are binary; you are either breathing or you are not. Spiritual death and life function like a compass. Your choices continuously turn you toward the darkness of isolation, emptiness, and fragmentation or toward the light of connection, purpose, and peace.

The Law of the Harvest: Reaping What We Sow

You cannot plant seeds of anger and expect to harvest a life of peace. Consider the anatomy of a grudge. When someone wrongs you, you face a critical decision tree:

The Path of Death

You choose resentment. You replay the injury. This choice feels vindictive and powerful at first, but over time, it rots your spiritual capacity. It breeds bitterness, closes your heart, and suffocates joy. This is spiritual death in slow motion.

The Path of Life

You choose the difficult work of forgiveness (challenge). This choice does not excuse the wrong, but it cuts the anchor tying you to the pain. Forgiveness injects life back into your soul, freeing you to move forward.

The Motion of Building Your Character

No single bad decision usually destroys a soul, just as no single healthy meal builds a perfect body. Spiritual death and life are matters of motion. Every decision you make acts as a vote for the person you want to become.

Small Compromises: Telling a “small” lie, cutting an ethical corner, or ignoring someone in need might feel insignificant. However, these choices dull your spiritual sensitivity. Over time, your conscience hardens.

Small Triumphs: Choosing honesty when it costs you, practicing patience when you are exhausted, or showing kindness to an enemy strengthens your spiritual muscles.

Eventually, these choices solidify into habits, habits harden into character, and character dictates your ultimate spiritual destiny. You become either spiritually hollow or fully alive, radiating light and warmth. Which one are you?

Navigating the Crossroads

Choosing life requires intentionality. Because the path of least resistance usually leads to spiritual stagnation, we must actively steer our decision-making process.

To ensure your decisions breed life, filter them through three spiritual guideposts:

Timeless Wisdom

Anchor your choices in foundational spiritual truths and scriptures rather than fleeting cultural trends or temporary emotions. This will lead you to death.

Counsel

Seek guidance from spiritual mentors, elders, or a trusted community who can offer objective perspective when your vision is clouded. I have two solid people in my life to whom I can go to for spiritual advice or decision making. I trust that their advice will lead me to life.

Inner Discernment

Silence the noise of the world through prayer, meditation, or quiet reflection. Listen to the quiet promptings of the Spirit, which bring deep internal peace rather than chaotic anxiety.

We tend to look for God in massive supernatural experiences. Spirituality is profoundly practical. It is found in the ordinary, messy crucible of daily decision-making.

You hold the power of death and life within your routine choices. By consciously choosing love over apathy, truth over convenience, and humility over pride, you awaken your soul to the vibrant, eternal life available to you right now. I am here to help you on that journey to Life.

Time to Reflect:

Do you happen to think about death and life as you get older? Do you think of your daily decisions as important crossroads that lead to either life or death?
