10 Best Primers for Mature Skin

By Sandra Roussy October 15, 2025 Beauty

Do you use a makeup primer? If you do, then you know that primers can help your makeup last throughout the day, can stop your foundation and concealer from creasing and creating unwelcome lines on your face, and also minimize the look of pores and fine lines.

Primers are the foundation you lay down before applying your makeup. Yes, a foundation BEFORE your foundation. Primers are sold in various options, and they are not all created equal. It’s best to choose a primer that suits your skin type, texture, and age.

Some makeup primer brands on the market today are produced with aging skin in mind. Let’s take a look at what makeup primers are and which ones are best for mature skin.

What Is a Makeup Primer?

Primers come in the form of cream, gel, mousse, or oil. The primer prepares your skin for makeup application. It gently lays a smooth layer of protection on your face so that when you apply your foundation or powder it doesn’t get absorbed by your skin, creating increased chances of creasing.

Some primers contain moisturizing ingredients and other agents to nourish the skin.

What Are the Different Types of Primers and Which One Should You Choose?

Silicone-Based Primers

These create a smooth, blurred surface and help fill in fine lines and pores. Ideal for events or photos but may feel too heavy for daily use if your skin is sensitive.

Water-Based Primers

These offer a lighter texture and are often better for hydrating mature or sensitive skin. They feel more breathable and absorb quickly.

Illuminating Primers

Perfect for dull or dry skin, these contain light-reflecting pigments that add radiance and glow, making skin look fresher and more awake.

Mattifying Primers

For those with mature skin that still leans oily in the T-zone, mattifying primers can reduce shine without settling into lines.

Color-Correcting Primers

Green primers reduce redness, peach or orange tones brighten dark spots or under-eye circles, and lavender tones combat sallowness.

What to Look for in a Primer

When selecting a primer for mature skin, it’s essential to prioritize products that address specific concerns related to aging skin, such as fine lines, wrinkles, uneven texture, and dullness.

Hydration

Look for primers that offer hydration and moisture to combat dryness, which is common in mature skin. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides can help to plump and hydrate the skin, creating a smoother canvas for makeup application.

Pro-Aging Properties

Seek primers formulated with pro-aging ingredients such as peptides, retinol, vitamin C, and antioxidants. These ingredients can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, boost collagen production, and protect your skin from environmental damage.

Texture-Smoothing

Opt for primers that have a lightweight, silky texture to smooth out fine lines and uneven texture. Silicone-based primers can help to fill in pores and create a smooth base for makeup application without feeling heavy or greasy.

Illuminating or Brightening Effects

Consider primers that offer luminosity or brightening properties to revive dull, lackluster skin. Ingredients like light-reflecting particles or pearl pigments can help to add radiance and create a youthful glow.

SPF Protection

If possible, choose a primer that contains SPF to provide additional sun protection and help prevent further skin damage. SPF is crucial for maintaining skin health and preventing premature aging caused by UV exposure.

Color Correction

Some primers come in different shades to address specific skin concerns, such as redness, discoloration, or sallowness. Choose a color-correcting primer that targets your specific concerns to even out skin tone and create a more balanced complexion.

Longevity

Look for primers that extend the wear time of your makeup while keeping it looking fresh throughout the day. A long-lasting primer can help your makeup stay put and minimize the need for touch-ups, which is especially beneficial for mature skin that may be prone to makeup settling into fine lines.

How to Apply Primers on Mature Skin

Primers come after you apply your moisturizer and sunscreen. A little goes a long way, so only a pea-size amount is usually needed.

Wait for about one minute before proceeding to do your makeup application. The type of primer you use (gel, mousse, oil, or cream) will determine how long it takes to set.

Best Primers by Skin Type (Quick Guide)

Choosing the right primer for your skin type can make a noticeable difference in how your makeup looks and lasts throughout the day. Here’s a simple guide to help you find the best match based on your skin’s needs:

Dry Skin

If your skin feels tight or flaky, hydration is your top priority. Look for primers that contain moisture-boosting ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or squalane. These help smooth the skin’s surface and keep foundation from settling into dry patches.

Try: Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base, MILK MAKEUP Hydro Grip, Laura Mercier Pure Canvas Hydrating Primer.

Oily or Combination Skin

If shine takes over your T-zone by midday or your foundation tends to slide off, you’ll want a mattifying or blurring primer. Look for formulas that help control oil without over-drying, especially silicone-based primers that minimize the look of pores.

Try: Lancôme La Base Pro, e.l.f. Poreless Putty Primer, Tatcha The Silk Canvas.

Sensitive Skin

If your skin reacts easily or feels irritated by many products, stick to primers with soothing, gentle ingredients and no added fragrance. Hydration and calming botanicals can help reduce redness and prep your skin without causing flare-ups.

Try: Tula Filter Primer, REVLON Prime Plus (Brightening + Skincare), IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better Primer+.

Dull or Uneven Skin Tone

If your skin looks a little tired or uneven, opt for brightening primers that contain light-reflecting particles or tone-evening ingredients. These add a subtle glow and help makeup look fresher and more radiant.

Try: L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Blurring Primer, Tula Filter Primer, REVLON Prime Plus.

Whatever primer you choose, make sure to look up product reviews and make an educated decision.

I’m having trouble finding a good make up primer and foundation for mature skin. At 66, I still have oily skin and need to find a primer and foundation that will help get rid of the shine. I would love a glow, but my skin looks greasy year-round. I’ve changed my serums and moisturizer, but nothing helps. Any suggestions?
