Eye Makeup for Older Women: Application on “Heavy Eyelids” and Other Tricks (Video)

By Margaret Manning May 18, 2016 Beauty

As we get a little older, we need to think carefully about the makeup techniques that we apply. This is especially true when it comes to eye makeup application, which is a delicate process at any age.

In a recent episode of the Sixty and Me show, I interviewed professional makeup artist, Ariane Poole about eye makeup for older women. I hope that you enjoy the show!

Gravity is So Unfair!

Let’s face it. Gravity is not a friend to older women. Many of the aches and pains that we develop in our 50s and 60s are the result of years of fighting the Earth’s pull. Even our eyes seem to get smaller as we age. This is because, as we age, our eye lids become so heavy that they obscure our beautiful eyes.

Whether your heavy lids are the result of the aging process, or you have suffered from “vanishing lids” your whole life, Ariane explains that there are makeup techniques that you can use to fight back.

Using Eye Makeup Techniques to Combat Heavy Lids

Let’s start with colors. In our interview, Ariane suggests using a sludgy taupe, mushroom or grey.

When it comes to application, Ariane says that the secret is to close your eyes and put the shadow on your eye lid. As you do this, be sure to put the shadow way higher than the socket line. Ariane explains that this can feel a bit awkward, but, it is the right technique to apply. In the video, Ariane gives a demonstration of the correct technique.

Next, Ariane warns us to be careful not to use eye shadows that are too shimmery or too light. This is because light shadows will always make the eye appear to move forward, accentuating our heavy lids. Instead, we should consider using a slightly darker shadow.

Finally, Ariane says that being bold with our makeup is one of the best ways to counter heavy lids. You are a beautiful woman and your makeup should reflect how you feel about yourself on the inside. So, don’t forget to have some fun!
