Every year, designers plan and create collections to show on international runways. These fashion shows, presented during major fashion weeks such as Paris, New York, Milan, and London, fuel inspiration for retailers who design pieces that follow the trends set by haute couture designers.
If you have ever watched a haute couture fashion show, you most likely saw that much of the clothing isn’t really everyday wear, and frankly, you wouldn’t be caught dead going to the supermarket in most of the styles that you see on the runways.
What fashion analysts and retail designers do is break down the styles and colors they see repeatedly across a variety of fashion week shows and adapt them to their collections for mainstream sale.
For women over 50, we have a few retailers who keep up with trends and create styles we can actually wear and still feel on-trend. Keep reading for my list of favorite stores for women over 50.
After watching several fashion shows and reading most of the fashion analysts from Vogue to Cosmopolitan, I have put together some key styles, elements, and colors that recur on many designers’ runways and that you will see in your favorite stores this year.
Fashion trends don’t have to be followed to a T. Actually, you may already have pieces in your wardrobe that you can update to make them feel new and on trend. I’m a big advocate for recycling and thrifting. Once you understand the trend, you can learn to adapt it in your personal way without going out and purchasing a whole new wardrobe.
Here are a few 2026 trends I think women over 50 can easily adopt.
Almost all fashion shows featured balloon pants, balloon skirts, and balloon-sleeve tops. What you will see in the stores is a tamed version of this trend. Look for pants with lots of fabric, pleats, and a balloon effect, and tops with balloon sleeves.

ZW COLLECTION PLEATED VOLUME PANTS from ZARA
TRF HIGH-WAIST BALLOON OVERSIZE JEANS at ZARA

Floral Striped Everyday Relaxed Shirt at LOFT

Soft and draped tailored jackets and feminine, robe-like styles with silk or satin finishes. Also, button-down cardigans are trending, and you will notice them in a variety of lengths and colors in stores.

Tweed Knit Lady Jacket at TALBOTS

Colorblock Cardigan Jacket at Chico’s
Layering is a big fashion statement this year. The trend was seen on all the runways; t-shirts on top of sweaters, sweaters under dresses, you’ll start to think about layering in a totally different way.

Striped V-Neck 2 in 1 Sweater Vest at Chico’s

DOUBLE LAYER KNIT CARDIGAN at ZARA

Scarves were seen around the neck, around the waist, and tied to accessories. Satin scarves with interesting prints were seen as hair accessories, neck ties, and tied to bags. Larger scarves can be used as shawls and styled as a layering piece.

Rope Relic Square Scarf at Chico’s

Handloomed Organic Cotton Herringbone Scarf at Eileen Fisher
Clutches are trending and come in a variety of styles and sizes, with or without shoulder straps. Look for bags with details like drawstring closures and vintage-inspired details.

Jason Wu Pleated Knot Clutch with Shoulder Strap at Macy’s

Tassels and fringes were seen on everything, but I must admit that it is a tad difficult to pull off at our age. One way to incorporate the trend without buying a short fringe skirt is to add tassel jewelry to your outfit.

SOHI Tassel Drop Earrings at Macy’s

We saw all shades of blue on the runways, from navy and cobalt to pastel. Also, denim was omnipresent, from jackets to bags.

Some years we see a dominance of pastels or jewel tones, but this year will be all about primary colors: blue, red, and yellow. Expect to see red shoes, cobalt blue sweaters, and yellow dresses in 2026.

Whitley Buckle Suede Flats at TALBOTS
Pantone names a “color of the year” yearly, and this year the color is Cloud Dancer. The Pantone Color of the Year typically influences home decor and fashion.

Camel is also a hot color this year, along with similar neutrals. A camel jacket with blue jeans is a hot look that we can easily wear.

Belted Midi Pocket Skirt at LOFT

Some retailers understand our 50+ bodies better than others. They also understand that we want to stay up to date with the trends without trying to look like a 20-year-old.
These stores and brands are some of my favorites:

Chico’s is always keeping up with trends and consistently offers new collections every few months. They design styles meant for mature women who love to follow trends. From the cuts to the fabrics, they have our needs in mind.

Talbot’s is an iconic American brand that somehow always manages to offer classic styles with just the right amount of trend each season.

Eileen Fisher consistently offers high-quality pieces that you can cherish for years. She also dives into the trends each season to subtly tap into the key colors and styling features that can be applied to her timeless designs, with comfort in mind.

J.Jill is another retailer that has our needs in mind. They offer quality basics in soft silhouettes while still offering the right amount of trend in each collection.

ZARA is for the more adventurous women and fashionistas over 50. They design several collections every season, keeping a variety of women in mind. It remains one of my favorite stores when I want to find a trending outfit.
Fashion trends are not strict rules to follow; they are simply guides for you to use (or not) as you please. As women over 50, we know our fashion style and what we like to wear by now. For those of us who like to stay on trend, incorporating some of these ideas into our wardrobes can help us look modern and fresh. I love blue and everything denim, so applying this trend this year is easy for me. When yellows or oranges are trending, I typically skip them. Don’t force something into your closet that you don’t think you’ll wear.
The styles shown in this article are simply examples of the trends mentioned. You can easily adapt the trend to items you already have and style them in a new way.
Hope this breakdown of the 2026 fashion trends helps you to understand this year’s trends better and that, if you wish, can find ways to easily apply them to your daily outfits.

While I appreciate your style suggestions for those of us over 50 (really, over 60), I simply cannot take your pants suggestions seriously! Very wide legged pants, some with huge pleats or balloon bottoms – you have to be kidding! I wouldn’t be caught dead in any of those!! However, your tops, blouses and jacket suggestions are great….and timeless.
Hi Diane, thanks for reading. :)
In this article, I’m not making suggestions to you about what you should wear. I’m just sharing a sneak peek at what’s coming in fashion trends for 2026. Trends come and go, and everyone gets to decide what works for them and what doesn’t.
I curate the trends I review and select those I consider most applicable to women our age. I exclude styles such as crop tops, see-through shirts, fringe miniskirts, and lace babydoll dresses, for example.
Think of this as a friendly preview of some of the colors and styles you’ll start seeing in stores this year. :))
Cheers!
Sandra
The mid-calf length – no thanks. It looked OK on me in the 70s. Now, not good.
The balloon pants are great IF you are taller, have a waist and not fat. Otherwise you will look dumpy.
It would be a little more convincing if the models were in their 60s instead of maybe late 30s
Hi Judith and thank you for commenting. All images come from the retailers mentioned in the article. Please take this age issue with your favorite store. Hopefully, they will start using models in their 60s more often. For now, we can only use what’s available.
It’s a neverending battle…
Also, not just in their 60’s but with the paunchy belly fat and wider hips that go with being that age. Not a super skinny model.
