When transitioning from winter to spring, which I like to call onion season, knowing how to layer your clothing is essential. As a woman over 60, you probably already know how to layer for practicality. Let’s take a look at some layering tricks that you may not be aware of.
Did you know that layering is a hot trend in 2026? Many haute couture runway shows at the international fashion weeks displayed unique and unexpected layering combos. We saw t-shirts over button-down shirts, sweaters under dresses, lace skirts over pants, and surprising fabric combinations like silk nighties over wool sweaters. While most of these styles are not feasible for everyday life, some ideas can be adapted to freshen up your wardrobe and layering techniques.

While layering when transitioning from winter to spring is mostly for practical reasons, don’t hesitate to try new and unexpected layering techniques this year.
We typically layer with lighter fabrics as the first layer on our skin and add thicker, heavier pieces over, like a sweater over a t-shirt, for example.
Want to layer in a trendy way? Why not try an oversized solid t-shirt over a striped sweater?

A middle layer can be a buttoned cardigan, a structured sleeveless vest, or a jacket over a short-sleeve shirt, for example. It should be light enough to add a coat on top.

This layer is the warmest layer you will add and the one you will most likely wear outside, taking it off when going inside, like a long wool tailored coat.

Don’t hesitate to let layers show through:
Scarves make great layering pieces. You can use them around your neck or drape them over your shoulders to create a shawl for a practical and trendy layering technique.

When the season calls for chilly mornings and warm afternoons, having layers to add and remove is the best way to tackle the day without getting cold or overheating. As the months get warmer, choose lighter fabrics and select fewer layers.
When layering, colors have to coordinate, but don’t necessarily have to be matchy-matchy. Play with colors and patterns, and don’t hesitate to try combos that you usually wouldn’t. You may be pleasantly surprised at the result.
Here are a few examples of combos and patterns that work well together:

Bulking is an easy mistake to make when layering in seasonal transitions. The key to successful winter-to-spring layering is selecting pieces that work together, come off easily, and still look complete when worn on their own. The most important thing is to be comfortable in every item you wear, whether alone or with others.
This is the year to experiment and have fun with layering. Play with colors, patterns, and proportions more than you ever have.
