The Benefits of Knitting Include Time Travel

By Margaret Manning December 06, 2014 Lifestyle

There is something primitive and wondrous about making something out of nothing. Women understand this on a deeply psychological level. Perhaps this is due to the fact that we are capable of creating life. Or, maybe our varied roles throughout history have taught us the value of being resourceful and creative.

This weekend, as I sat knitting a long pink scarf, I realized a few things. First, I understood how my own love of kitting comes, in part, from my desire to create. There is something deeply satisfying about taking raw materials and turning them into something beautiful.

Second, as I worked, I felt like I was in a time-machine. I remembered the way that my mother used to knit – and the joy that it brought her. It made me wonder whether modern society makes us so busy that we forget to take advantage of simple pleasures.

Knitting is like traveling in a time machine.

Hobbies for women over 50 are more than “time killers.” They connect us to the act of creation. They are a form of meditation in a world filled with buzzing objects and constant distractions. It doesn’t really matter what you love to do as long as you love to do something. Some women love embroidery, sewing, writing, quilting, painting and photography. Others, like me, find peace in their knitting.

How about you? I’d love to find out more about how the women in our community spend their time. So, let’s get a conversation started!

Do you have a special craft or hobby that you enjoy? How do you feel when you are doing it? Does it feel like a form of meditation? Or, do you feel the opposite – that your hobby gives you time to think? Please join the conversation.
