Let’s Crush the Prejudices About Fashion for Older Women

By Sophia Smith November 16, 2024 Beauty

There are an increasing number of older women crushing today’s prejudices about their lack of style.

As an inspiration for this piece, I’ve turned to style icons such as Sophia Loren and Susan Sarandon that show how maturity gives a whole different tone to the concept of glamour. Maturity leaves an impression of sophistication, confidence, and elegance.

Here are ways you can incorporate glamour into your everyday look.

Self-Care and Signature Looks

Glamorous women always enhance their best assets, which makes their style unique and recognizable. Start with your hair: is the color flattering you? If you have completely gray hair, you don’t necessarily have to dye it: You can make it a part of your signature look. What about the cut? You don’t have to wear it short if you don’t want to!

In addition to right fashion pieces, hairstyles are the easiest way to make a statement. Just think about Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue. She has been wearing her bob with bangs for years now and it’s not at all boring. It has become her signature look that contributes to her overall glamour.

Carefully Selected Jewelry

If you look at Susan Sarandon or Julianne Moore, you will notice that their styles are balanced and simple, but always with some sort of statement piece that brings their looks from plain to glamorous.

Imagine a simple all-black combination with just a pair of sparkling earrings or a necklace. It is a wallet-friendly no-fuss look that is age appropriate, but not boring. Pieces from stores like Target, 7 Charming Sisters and Zara have a wide offer of exactly the type of accessories which will make you look so glamorous!

If your outfit is in earthly tones, don’t be afraid to incorporate a bit of color through the choice of your necklace for a chic look. Stick with all-silver or faux precious stones if you want a more classic glamour look. The devil’s in the details: Consider a brooch to break the dullness of the outfit.

Outfits That Bring Out the Best in You

Well-fitted clothes are the key to looking polished. You can stick with monochromatic pieces if you love the minimalistic look and then enrich it with eye-catching details. Choose quality fabrics that will provide you with a dash of luxury. For example, nice high-waist trousers in a shade of tan, a thin beige belt, and a simple tucked in shirt within the same color range. Then choose eye-catching pointy flats (like patent leather in shade of burgundy) and a black structured bag.

Depending on your preferences and temperament, you can choose patterned footwear or even subtle animal prints. Another way to add a bit of life to your look is by choosing a silky scarf you can wear in many different ways.

Use Makeup to Enhance Your Beauty

To draw attention to your eyes, use an eye pencil rather than liquid eyeliner to avoid smudges. Add a bit of a definition to your eyes this way and apply a coat of mascara. When it comes to the choice of foundation, blush, and lipstick – stick with the neutral shades for a classy look.

With just a bit of effort, everyone can add a dose of glamour to their everyday look.

I get lots of inspiration from Facebook videos of cityscape videos of people on Milan. They often show women much older than I and every body type strolling along. You can get tons of style options on hairstyles, shoes, bags and clothes combinations.

I loved the bit about “grey hair” I love mine I had what I term as an happy accident and I’ve stuck with it I, and this makes me sound terribly big headed, get lots of compliments from “I love your hair to is that really your own hair its gorgeous” oh and don’t get me started on boots thats something else I get complimented on…..I’ll be 70 in a few weeks and I dress the way I like not how someone thinks I should

Oh how I hate that so many of these Sixty and Me piece are still about beauty as we, as women, have so been slaves to worrying about beauty instead of substance, but I’m also torn because women over sixty are so discounted and it’s so easy to give up on ourselves and be frumps and grumps instead of women warriors taking on the war with style, substance and a glamour that forces us to be contended with. So, I’m conflicted and continuously committed to putting on my makeup and warrior face every single day to put my best foot (now usually in sneakers for balance, but not always) and face forward. Anyone else facing this conundrum and desire for less glamour pieces on Sixty and Me?

I do it for ME … not anyone else. I just feel good, more alive. I smile at myself in the mirror then get on with my day. I may or may not being going out – and I live
It can be beauty AND substance – for me, not someone else.

I really enjoy the pieces on beauty! I want to continue to do things that make me happy with the way I present myself to the world. It’s one of those things that help us not to feel invisible!
