Contrary to popular belief, engaging in regular physical stimulation and sensory arousal is not just about enhancing sexual pleasure.
Despite the pervasive, but outdated myths about aging, physical stimulation and sensory arousal deepens your connection with your body, increases confidence, and cultivates joy in your desired lifestyle after 60.
Physical stimulation and sensory arousal connect your mind and body, creating very intimate and personal experiences. Therefore, they are not dependent on a romantic partner.
Why should you engage in physical stimulation and explore experiences that arouse your senses after 60? And where would you even begin?
In this article, we will answer these questions and more.
This article and the accompanying video are the fourth of a new, 10-part exclusive series for 60 and Me readers titled “Improve Your Lifestyle After 60 by Boosting Your Sexual Confidence.”
Many people have been conditioned to view sensuality as something external, dependent on a partner or youthful body. However, sensory stimulation is deeply personal and can be intentionally nurtured through movement, touch, scent, sound, sight, and taste.
By intentionally engaging with your five senses, you awaken new forms of pleasure, expand your sensual self-awareness, and cultivate deeper self-love.
There are numerous medical studies, books, and courses that speak to the benefits of regular physical activity and sensory exploration to increase libido, reduce stress, and improve self-image. All of these are essential for maintaining an active and sexually pleasurable lifestyle after 60.
Dr. Emily Nagoski, author of “Come as You Are,” wrote, “Sensory pleasure is the gateway to self-awareness, intimacy, and vitality.”
Embracing physical stimulation and exploring new sensations allows you to:
By intentionally engaging your body and senses, you create a richer, more fulfilling connection with yourself and your sexuality. Here are five steps to help you improve your lifestyle with physical stimulation and sensory arousal:
There is a wide variety of options when engaging in physical activity. There are exercises like yoga or Pilates, each of which can increase blood flow, enhance flexibility, and improve self-image.
Of course, there is swimming or walking outdoors. You can also use the treadmill or elliptical machine indoors. And then there is sexual intercourse.
Whatever you want to do more of, be sure to consult your physician or certified trainer to get the ideal advice for your current state of health and your body type.
Beyond traditional intercourse, there are many ways to experience pleasure and stimulate arousal through your five senses. This can include massage and sensual touch, along with foods or drinks that create a feeling of pleasure and relax you.
There is also music that uplifts your spirit and initiates a positive shift in your sexual arousal. Then you have stimulating visuals and aromatherapy that can ignite your sexual desires and put you in the ideal mood for experiencing pleasure.
Wear lingerie or clothing that makes you feel sexy and confident, even if it’s just for yourself. Be sure also to admire yourself in the mirror while wearing these clothes.
As you admire yourself and feel the sensual nature of your clothes, give yourself the compliments you would seek from another.
When you are seeking new ways to be more sexual after 60, aligning your exterior mood with your inner feelings of intimacy, pleasure, and relaxation is of paramount importance.
Where do you begin?
Set the mood with a bath, soft lighting, music, scented candles, essential oils or whatever appeals to your senses. It may take a few attempts to get the proper balance between your internal desires and external elements. But it is worth the wait.
Growing up, we all heard, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” This means beauty is subjective and represents different things to different people.
But what about physical beauty? How does a radically diverse perception of physical beauty impact the lives of women and men over 60? Unfortunately, society’s idea of what constitutes beauty and sexiness is not often carried over to our aging bodies.
Remember, every person’s body is a good, sexy body. Rather than compare your body to how you looked in your youth or someone else’s physical appearance, celebrate your body and shower it with love. Make time each morning and throughout the day to love yourself through self-hugs and consistently acknowledge your body’s beauty.
By implementing these five steps, you can transform your body from being negatively judged and shamed into something to be celebrated, nurtured, and loved.
In our next article and video in the series, you will learn how to engage in self-romance to create a renewed sense of purpose, self-worth, and happiness after 60.
I invite you to join me in the video, where I share five immediate benefits of physical stimulation and three journal prompts to help you integrate what you are learning.
