Part 2 of a series on the wisdom that only comes from a life fully lived.
In my last article in this series, I shared something I’ve come to believe deeply: the world doesn’t need younger versions of us. It needs our wisdom.
Yet when I talk with women our age about sharing what they know, I often hear the same quiet doubt, in one form or another.
“Who would want to hear what I have to say?”
“I’ve just lived an ordinary life.”
“I don’t really have any wisdom to share.”
“I’d feel like an imposter.”
If you’ve ever had a thought like that, this article is for you. Because I believe your experiences are worth far more than you’ve been taught to believe.
For 35 years, I helped Fortune 500 companies find the patterns hidden in their data. One lesson showed up again and again: The most valuable information was often the most overlooked.
Companies would sit on years of records, assuming it was just history. Then someone would look closely and find the pattern that changed everything.
Our lives are like that.
We’ve gathered decades of experience. Every challenge we navigated. Every relationship we nurtured. Every mistake we recovered from. Every time we figured something out the hard way.
Most of us file it all away as “just what happened.” But inside that history are patterns. Insights. Hard-earned truths.
The wisdom has been there all along. What’s often missing is someone taking the time to look.
In my work, I describe wisdom as the place where three things meet:
Each of these is valuable on its own. But the place where all three overlap is something no one else carries.
Two people can live through similar seasons and come away with completely different wisdom. That’s because no one else has your exact blend. I call this your Quantum Wisdom™.
Here’s the curious thing. We are often the last to see our own value.
What comes easily to us feels ordinary. Of course you know how to comfort a frightened friend, or read a room, or start over after a loss. You’ve done it for years. Surely everyone can.
They can’t.
Many of us were also taught that talking about our strengths was bragging. So we learned to say, “Oh, it was nothing.” Over time, we started to believe it.
And sometimes the experiences that taught us the most are the ones we’d rather forget. The hardest chapters of my own life, the ones I wrote about last time, became the source of my deepest compassion. But for years, I couldn’t see them as anything but pain.
This isn’t a lack of wisdom. It’s a blind spot. And blind spots can be lovingly illuminated.
Think about the questions friends, family, and colleagues bring to you. The advice they seek. The moments they call. That’s a clue to what you carry.
Choose a few people who know you well and ask: “What do you see as my strengths? How have I made a difference for you?” Their answers may surprise you and touch you. This is especially powerful through email since it gives them time to prepare a thoughtful response.
Choose one season of your life that shaped you. Then ask yourself: What did this teach me? What can I do now that I couldn’t do before? Who could I help because I went through it?
Write down whatever comes up. Don’t judge it. Simply notice, and let it be enough.
Every season of your life has added something.
The careers. The caregiving. The losses and the recoveries. The countless small acts of love that no one else ever saw.
None of it was wasted. All of it counts.
Somewhere, someone is walking a road you’ve already traveled. What feels ordinary to you may be exactly what they need to hear.
Your experiences have value.
Perhaps the first step is simply to allow yourself to believe it.
Next time, I’ll explore one of the most tender truths of this journey: that even our hardest challenges were not wasted.
There is a whisper inside you – a resonant knowing that there is more to give, more to share, more to become.
