5 Steps to Navigate the Inner Journey of Self-Love

By Joanie Marx September 12, 2026 Mindset

Have you experienced a time after turning 60 when you felt lonely, unloved, undervalued, or unsexy?

If so, you are not alone.

Even those who are perceived as beautiful, sexy, and successful often feel lonely, unloved, undervalued, or unsexy. They just do a better job at hiding it than others.

If external validation and lofty achievements are not enough to feel sexy and create your dream lifestyle after 60, what is?

We’ll answer that question by exploring the daily practice of going inward.

This article and the accompanying video are the eighth of a new, 10-part exclusive series for 60 and Me readers titled “Improve Your Lifestyle After 60 by Boosting Your Sexual Confidence.”

The Benefits of Going Inward

To improve your lifestyle, which includes embracing your sexuality, you will want to slow down an overly busy schedule, quiet lingering anxiety, and make time to go inward.

In recent years, numerous neuroscience and clinical studies have revealed the immense benefits of going inward for people over 60.

These benefits include sharper cognitive performance, greater mental clarity, lower blood pressure, reduced muscle tension, and decreased cortisol levels, all of which conserve energy often depleted by chronic stress.

Dr. Amy Sullivan of the Cleveland Clinic notes that calm, quiet moments engage parts of the nervous system that help deactivate the body’s physical response to stress.

“Learning to sit in stillness and self-reflect is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves and our loved ones,” says Dr. Sullivan. “When we look internally and delve deeper into our value system and wants and needs, we can communicate our desires at a deeper level. We have to foster that ability.”

Knowing the benefits of going inward isn’t always enough for people to do it. If this is true for you, it’s not because you don’t want to. It’s more likely because you have never done it at the level this 10-part exclusive series for 60 and Me readers is showing you.

The Fears of Going Inward

One of the more common fears people over 60 have about slowing down and going inward is that you would get behind on other important responsibilities, such as caring for other people’s needs.

Another common fear is what others in your life would say if you told them you needed time and space for self-love, self-care, and self-romance activities.

Whatever your fears may be, the truth is you are in uncharted territory. This unfamiliar, uncomfortable feeling often stops most people from going inward consistently.

That is why you will want to create an inner roadmap to self-love.

Your 5-Step Inner Roadmap

An inner roadmap to self-love is important at this stage of your life journey for many reasons. Distractions, moments of self-doubt, and deeply layered inner resistance are inevitable. All of this can temporarily derail even the best-laid plans to love yourself and embrace more of your sexuality.

When you have a clear idea of where you currently are and how to get to where you want to go, it’s a lot easier to refocus and renew your lifestyle. This is especially true when you face sudden changes and obstacles.

With that in mind, here are five essential steps to create your inner roadmap to self-love.

Set Healthy Boundaries

To navigate your inner roadmap to self-love after 60, the first thing you will want to do is set boundaries. But not just with others. More importantly, with yourself. Loving more of yourself often means saying no and prioritizing your own well-being over outside influences. By setting and maintaining healthy boundaries, you create space and time to go inward.

Reflection and Acceptance

When you have more space and time to go inward, you may wonder what to do first. At first, going inward means reflecting on your life journey, the challenges you’ve faced, the victories you’ve achieved, and the wisdom you’ve gained. Accepting and loving all parts of your life helps you embrace the new you with compassion, which makes it easier to create a new lifestyle.

Celebrate Your Strengths

You cannot go inward and love yourself if you’re tearing yourself down. That is why going inward is the ideal way to reflect on all you’ve achieved and honor the challenges you’ve overcome. Recognize and celebrate your strengths, talents, and accomplishments. You will be delighted to know you are far more lovable, successful, accomplished, capable, and sexier than you have been led to believe.

Reconnect with Your Passions

Responsibilities for other people may have led you to put your passions and interests on the back burner. Not anymore. When you go inward, you can more easily reconnect with your innermost desires, passions, and needs. Tapping into what makes your heart sing makes it easier to take inspired, physical action in your outer world to cater to your passions, hobbies, and interests.

Open Your Mind and Heart

Seek out information about new ideas and activities you haven’t engaged in but have piqued your interest, especially as it relates to embracing more of your sexuality. Once you have found what you’re looking for, use your time to go inward and visualize yourself engaging in these activities. Once you see yourself living your dream lifestyle, it’s easier to believe you can achieve it.
