Experimentation is Essential when it Comes to Fashion for Women Over 60 (Video)
In many ways, fashion for women over 60 is no different than at any other age. On the one hand, you want to express your personal style. On the other hand, you know that you need to select cuts and styles that go with your body type, while giving you confidence.
Far from being a time of limitations, life after 60 provides so many opportunities for expressing ourselves. Many of us no longer feel like we need to impress others – even if we still want to look stylish. We have left our “uniforms” behind. This gives us the freedom to experiment with new styles and choose clothes that make us feel great.
On today’s episode of the Sixty and Me Show, I interview the fabulous Lyn Slater, who has a lot to say about experimenting with your style after 60. Lyn runs a fashion blog called Accidental Icon and I know that you are going to love what she has to say about fashion for women over 60. Enjoy the show!
Who is the Accidental Icon?
For most of her life, Lyn was an academic. She loved this side of herself, but, as she got a little older, she found herself feeling somewhat constricted by her image. She wanted to rebel and experiment with new styles. She wanted to show the world who she really was on the inside.
As Lyn struggled to reinvent herself, she learned a great deal about fashion and style. More importantly, she learned a lot about herself. As her confidence grew, she decided to share what she was learning about fashion, style and experimentation with the world. Thus, the Accidental Icon was born!
Like many women in our community, Lyn held herself back in her younger years. She felt like she needed to conform to other people’s expectations. Now, she is living her dreams and dressing in her own fabulous way. I hope that she inspires you to do the same!
Should You Care What Other People Think After 60?
Older women face a lot of social pressure to conform. In the movies and on TV, we see conservatively dressed women in black or navy. We are told that “aging gracefully” is the only appropriate option. Lyn points out that we have more freedom than we think. Other people’s expectations are not our problem. They are society’s problem.
The bottom line, says Lyn, is that you should wear clothes that excite you. This is going to mean something different for every woman – and that’s ok! We are all individuals and we are all excited by different things. The important thing is that YOU feel amazing. Ironically, when you do, the world will start to realign its expectations to your reality.
How to Build Your Wardrobe in Your 60s and Better
Lyn is a big believer in experimentation. At the same time, she thinks that women should take the time to choose high-quality “foundational” clothes that can be accessorized. For example, Lyn loves black and white, classical clothes for her wardrobe essentials. Then, she lets her bohemian side show through stunning shoes and expressive jewelry. She is also a fan of earrings, which have become an iconic part of her style.
In fact, this is very similar to the advice that fashion expert Melanie Payge gave me when I met with her in Italy to film a series of fashion videos.
As older women, now is the time to let our clothes express our true selves. You are vibrant, expressive, unique and confident. Your clothes should be too! If you enjoyed my interview with Lyn Slater, please share it with a friend. For more fashion tips, don’t forget to check out Accidental Icon.
