Fashion Tips for Women Over 60: What to Wear to a Casual Dinner

By Stephen Hadley April 20, 2017 Beauty

You’ve been invited to a casual dinner with friends. It’s going to be a great time. You love their company, and you enjoy laughing and chatting over good food and a few glasses of wine.

But what are you going to wear?

The word “casual” has a relaxed and low-key vibe. Even so, it can be hard to figure out what exactly to wear to a casual dinner. It’s even harder if you’re choosing from limited options of plus size clothing. You may feel like you’re stuck wearing the same old thing over and over again. Or you may think that you don’t have anything worth wearing.

But no worries. There’s no need for real concern. You can look great at your fun, casual event. And most importantly – you can feel great and enjoy your time with friends. I hope that you find the following fashion tips for women over 60 helpful! Here’s how to do it.

Make Comfort a Priority

Casual clothing should be comfortable. Period.

A casual event will have a relaxed atmosphere. Your clothing should reflect that. Choose a top that feels great and allows for easy movement – like a simple tank top, a casual plus size tunic, or a button-up blouse. A casual dinner is also the perfect time for your favorite pair of jeans or pants.

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel here. Just stick to your casual favorites. You’ll look great.

Wear What Complements You

What’s more comfortable than an outfit that always wins you compliments? This is the look you’re going for when you head out for a casual dinner.

Of course, you don’t need one dinner uniform that you always wear. Instead, add elements to your outfit that complement you. Here are some ways to mix it up:

Casual Fashion Tips for Women Over 60: Colors

Always get compliments in your favorite red top? Is a tie-dye tunic your new go-to item? You can use them in your casual outfit. Or, choose similar colors and styles but with different garments. That way you keep the complementary look without feeling stuck in a rut.

Casual Fashion Tips for Older Women: Styles

Is there a neck or sleeve style that shows off your best features? Perhaps bell sleeves or a deep-V neckline that works with your body type? Choose these for your casual dinner outfit. Remember, comfort should still be a priority.

Keep Things Simple

Casual should be simple. Keep up the low-key vibe with basic accessories. Stud or small hoop earrings work well. Match them with a classically styled wristwatch and you’re good to go.

Want to step things up a bit? Add a chunky bracelet or necklace that complements your outfit’s colors. Keep these fun and colorful – nothing that takes your casual look into formal territory.

When you’re dressing casual, don’t overthink your accessories. Go with a simple look that feels right.

Think About the Location

Where is this casual dinner happening? It will affect how you put together your winning ensemble.

For example – will you be dining outdoors? If so, consider bringing along a casual jacket or cover-up. Choose a lightweight material that offers coverage and a little warmth without being heavy.

Is there a chance your casual dinner will shift to drinks after? Choose a basic, versatile outfit that you can easily dress up a notch if needed. This is easy. You can start with a simple button-up blouse or tunic in a solid color or toned-down print. Bring along a casual jacket or cardigan that complements it with a bolder print. That way, you stay casual and still manage to look fantastic.

Make sure you’ve got comfortable footwear too. If you’re not sure where you may be headed after dinner, you’ll want shoes that can accommodate you.

Don’t try to dress up your shoes too much. Leave the heels at home and kick back in something casual. Basic flats or sandals make for a winning outfit.

Look Your Best for Dinner

A casual dinner with friends is the perfect opportunity for a cute and stylish outfit. Keep things casual and comfortable. Resist the urge to over-accessorize. And don’t forget to bring along a lightweight jacket just in case.

Make sure your accessories complement your outfit without making you look out of place.

Like with so many things in life, simple is better. You’ll stress less about what you’re wearing to the dinner and be able to just enjoy yourself.
