Beyond Burgundy: 8 Unexpected Autumn 2026 Colors That Brighten Mature Skin and Refresh Your Wardrobe

By Sandra Roussy September 14, 2026 Beauty

Burgundy will always have a place in an autumn wardrobe. It is rich and considerably easier to wear than, let’s say, pumpkin orange. Autumn 2026 is offering us unexpected color palettes that are far more interesting than the usual collection of wine, rust, camel, and forest green.

This season, designers are using color with more confidence. Saturated blue, purple, tomato red, marigold, pink, and unexpected pastels appeared throughout the fall/winter collections. Power blues appeared in the autumn/winter collections at Prada, Dior, and Chanel. Purple also had a particularly strong presence on the runways. Pantone’s New York Fashion Week report also describes the autumn/winter 2026-2027 palette as a mix of familiar, grounded shades and more experimental colors.

Fall/Winter 2026 – 2027 Color Trends

Here are eight autumn 2026 colors worth trying if you feel like refreshing your wardrobe.

Transformative Teal

Teal falls somewhere between blue and green, although some versions lean noticeably more in one direction. Rich teal has appeared among the leading colors of 2026 and offers a brighter alternative to traditional forest green.

It’s also surprisingly easy to combine with colors you may already own. Wear a teal sweater with charcoal trousers, a teal blouse under a navy jacket, or a teal scarf with a camel coat.

Deeper teal can be especially flattering near the face because it provides color without the harshness of neon or the heaviness of very dark green. Women with cooler coloring may prefer a blue or teal, while warmer complexions may look better in versions with more green.

Power Blue

Blue was one of the strongest color stories on the 2026 runways. Cobalt appeared in the fall collections of Bottega Veneta and Givenchy,  while other designers worked with shades ranging from icy blue to deep electric versions.

Power blue is clear, confident, and difficult to ignore. Fortunately, you don’t need to wear it from neck to ankle.

A cobalt cardigan can make a white shirt and dark jeans feel current. A blue handbag can wake up a gray coat. A soft icy blue sweater can be gentler near the face than black, particularly one paired with silver jewelry.

Choose the intensity that suits you. Bright cobalt creates contrast, while powdery and icy blues produce a softer effect.

Fresh Purple

Purple had a particularly strong presence in the 2026 collections. Vibrant purple appeared at Burberry, Valentino, and Chloé, while deeper eggplant was shown as an alternative to black and brown for autumn.

Purple can sound intimidating, possibly because some of us still associate it with enormous 1980s shoulder pads and matching eyeshadow. The current versions are much easier to wear

Try a deep aubergine knit with taupe trousers, and a violet blouse with dark denim, or a purple scarf over a simple gray coat. Softer plum and blackberry shades are useful when bright violet feels too strong.

Purple can also bring warmth and interest to gray or silver hair without overpowering it.

Tomato Red

Tomato red is brighter and slightly warmer than classic blue red. It appeared across both the spring/summer and fall/winter 2026 collections.

This is definitely not a shy color. Even a small amount can change an outfit completely.

A tomato red sweater worn with dark jeans may be all you need. You could also try a handbag, scarf, flat shoe, or lipstick rather than a large garment.

Because tomato red contains warmth, it often works well with camel, cream, olive, and chocolate brown. Women who find warm reds difficult near the face can keep the shade below the waist or use it as an accessory.

Moss Green

Moss green offers a quieter alternative to teal and chartreuse. It appeared among the important shades at New York Fashion Week, while army- and nature-inspired greens remain visible in the London collections.

Unlike some olive shades, moss green usually has a little more life in it. It still feels grounded and autumnal, but it does not disappear into a sea of brown.

Consider moss trousers with a cream sweater, a green cardigan over a denim shirt, or a soft green jacket worn with black. It’s also an excellent handbag color because it coordinates with so many neutrals.

If moss green makes your complexion look tired, separate it from your face with a cream blouse, a colored scarf, or a brighter necklace.

Marigold Yellow

Marigold appeared in the fall/winter collections of Calvin Klein, Marni, and Tory Burch. Milan designers also included marigold among the brighter shades, breaking up the season’s black, navy, and gray.

It’s deeper than lemon yellow but brighter than traditional mustard.

Marigold can look wonderful beside the face when it suits your undertone. A knit sweater, blouse, or scarf may warm the complexion and make gray or white hair look especially striking.

It is not universally flattering, however. When the shade makes you look sallow, wear it farther from your face in a skirt, handbag, or shoe.

Soft Pink

Pink is refusing to leave when summer ends. Baby and mid-toned pink appeared in several autumn/winter Milan designers’ collections.

For autumn, look for pink with a little depth rather than very sugary pastel shades. Dusty rose, soft raspberry, warm shell pink, and muted bubble gum can all work with heavier fabrics and darker neutrals.

A pink sweater under a gray jacket is simple and modern. Pink also pairs beautifully with burgundy, chocolate brown, and navy.

Near the face, the right pink can add a healthy-looking warmth. The wrong one may emphasize redness, so compare several versions rather than deciding that all pink is unsuitable.

Creamy Winter White

Dark colors may dominate autumn, but creamy white offers some much-needed contrast. Winter white appeared on the London runways, while soft off-white also remained important throughout the wider 2026 color stories.

Winter white is generally warmer and less stark than optic white. That subtle softness can be easier near mature skin, particularly during months when natural light is less forgiving.

Try an ivory sweater with camel trousers, a cream blouse under a navy blazer, or winter white jeans with a moss green jacket. Mixing several shades of cream, oatmeal, and beige can also create an elegant tonal outfit.

How to Know Whether a Color Suits You

Seasonal color analysis can be useful, but it shouldn’t become another set of rules telling you what you are allowed to wear.

Start by holding the garment near your face and in natural daylight. Do not judge the color under yellow bathroom lighting or beneath the small spotlight apparently used in every department store fitting room.

Look at your face rather than the garment. A suitable color may make your skin appear more even, your eyes clearer, and shadows beneath the eyes less noticeable. A less helpful shade may emphasize redness, sallowness, dark circles, or uneven pigmentation.

Compare neighboring shades. You may look wonderful in deep teal but tired in pale turquoise. Tomato red may work better than burgundy, or blackberry may suit you more than bright violet.

Your hair color matters too. Silver, white, or gray hair may change the amount of contrast that looks flattering. Colors that were once considered too strong may suddenly look wonderful, while some old favorites may no longer feel quite right.

Do You Need a New Wardrobe?

No. A new color trend does not require a new wardrobe.

Before buying anything, look through what you already own. You may have a teal scarf, purple blouse, pink sweater, or blue handbag that has been waiting patiently for fashion to notice it again.

Next, think about the neutral colors you wear most often. Choose one or two trend shades that work with those neutrals and with each other. Someone who owns plenty of navy, cream, and denim might add power blue and tomato red. A wardrobe built around camel and chocolate could work well with teal, marigold, or moss green.

Trends are suggestions, not assignments. The best autumn color is still the one that makes you look in the mirror and think, “yes, that still looks like me, just slightly less predictable.”
