I think we can all agree that there’s some truth to the stereotype that women love shoes. For some of us, “obsessed” would be a more appropriate word. Throughout our lives, shoes have been a part of our identity. Now, as we get a little older, we have to learn to adapt to our changing feet.
When I met with fashion expert, Melanie Payge, to film our fashion for older women video series, I was amazed by the number of simple, yet powerful, tips that she was able to provide. From not wearing a white bra with a white top to the importance of tailoring, Melanie was an amazing source of practical information and advice.
Be honest. How many scarves do you have tucked away at your house? Dozens? Let’s put them to good use as a part of your fashion for women over 60 plan.
I have a confession to make. I love shoes. Unfortunately, finding stylish shoes for older women is a challenge. Even when you find a store that sells fashionable and reasonably priced shoes, choosing the best pair isn’t always easy. So, to help demystify the shoe buying process, I turned to fashion expert Melanie Payge.
When I visited Milan to interview fashion expert, Melanie Payge, I had the opportunity to spend some time in the amazing showroom and tailor, Atelier Sangalli. What an amazing experience! Tailoring is one of the oldest and most fascinating professions and to experience the process in the heart of Milan was an absolute treat. I came away thinking that, in a world filled with mass-produced clothing and cookie-cutter styles, it’s a shame that more women don’t take advantage of the services of these highly skilled professionals.
Before leaving for Milan to interview fashion expert, Melanie Payge, I asked the women in our community to send me their fashion questions. As I studied their emails, certain patterns emerged. For example, while the women in our community are wonderfully unique, their fashion concerns are strikingly similar.
I’m not a big fan of the labels that society attaches to women’s bodies and neither was fashion expert, Melanie Payge, when we filmed our fashion over 60 videos. On the other hand, the fact is, when it comes to purchasing clothes, women really do face unique challenges based on their body types.
Do you have a passion for fashion? The more you follow the latest trends, the more mistakes you’ll make with regards to fashion for women over 60. Instead of focusing on timeless fashion principles, your attention is fixed on short-term fads that don’t play to your strengths as a beautiful and confident older woman.
Over the decades, women over 60 have experimented with different fashion trends and, through process of elimination, we have found a few styles that we love. We adapted our style to the many roles that we were asked to play – student, mother, career woman and grandmother.
Summer is finally here and, like many women, I am ready to refresh my wardrobe. There’s only one problem. Most clothing for older women is just plain, well… plain.
